in reply to: Giving It Up #53972
Two million years ago (+or-) our ancestors came out of the trees and started hunting meat on the ground. They seem to have been successful. The other branch of our family still lives in trees and eats veggies. I’m with you Paleo. Dave used to fly Marine helicopters–he knows a lot about almost dieing –every time he took off-therefore IMHO his advice in this area is suspect. Take it from me –stay out of the trees and out of helicopters.

in reply to: long shots #48497Dave–nice rudder. Defining hunter and success seems to me the key issue. My uncle (taught me trad. bow hunting) said it this way–a good hunters point will hit the deer before the feathers clear the bow. He then looked at me and said–enjoy every minute you are out there–that is the hunt.:D

there is a lot of it out there now. Be cautious as most of it is high tech very durable very noisy. The old days of quiet wool and canvas are gone. In addition a lot of it has survived 10 years in a war zone in contrast to the vast quantities that were produced for WW 2 that never left the states. If you can find the old stuff go for it.
Most packs are monsters (we haven’t learned about a soldiers burden) there are some small recon stuff–hard to find. Good luck–let us know if you find a good source.

in reply to: Barta in a high fence? #9494Folks please drop all the “sirs” when responding to my posts. I am retired and have attained the nickname here as Col.Mike–or call sign Husky 6 but if I am not buying you a drink at the bar-sir is not required:Dd
Ethics–what a great discussion–and you are all right. Ethics are a personal choice–the only person you have to justify that choice too is that image in the mirror.
IMHO–we do more good for our stance on hunting by promoting it then we will ever do by singling out an individuals choice. As my father used to say–small minds talk about people-medium minds talk about things and possessions–great minds discuss concepts. As we are all a mix of that I think we should gravitate toward the medium to great thoughts. Semper Fi Mike
Books!!!
Have all recommended, will check my library tomorrow for some rec. for you all. Next to new gear–books drive my wife crazy as I buy about 3 a week and read 4. Oh here is one for you–The wolves of Isle of Royale–Rolf Peterson- 1995 so a dated study but still significant.
Think I’ve done a good job this evening from removing that Dave guy from the posting headlines although not as sage or informative–but then I am younger:D
Have to sign off as we have two teams to run tomorrow on sleds in our first doable snow.

in reply to: Barta in a high fence? #8438Again at the risk of offending: When I taught ethics at the Naval Academy–I stressed these are guides to how you live your life. Best I could say-don’t worry about the other persons choices–follow your thoughts–accomplish the mission and take care of your troops. All else is a soap opera. You will find that with age and wisdom that other behaviors are worthy of your contemplation–but not your time.

in reply to: Here's to Mystery #8418At the risk of offending—we didn’t have a gov. that we could be proud of–we have a government —that we elected!
The most important freedom that we have is that our individual voices are important–but you have to speak up to be heard—and save us from the double speak politicians from either party. Demand accountability and I believe we will get it.
And back on thread–mystery, perhaps our founding fathers had a clue:roll:

Time for the delete button. Dave is obviously suffering cabin fever way to soon or in to much Dickel. Either way he is missing something–as Alex said we are on this site to read his sage and sound advice–and besides it’s fun to argue with the MAN.

It just might happen that I will make the Kazoo rendezvous will ask you some questions on E-mail later when Lin is off. It’s a 500 mile drive–but we are looking at the schedule–:D
