Well you certainly stirred the bucket with that. The one thing that jumped out at me was the incredible amount of money that must be collected for conservation.
I wonder if anyone has ever traced the paper trail and reported on where that money really goes. It smells to me like politicians and insiders, laughing at us.
I’m not a lawyer and certainly unaware of the various state regulations–shoot I have trouble with the MD ones, it will be interesting to see what some of our more informed participants think—Forager?

Again you hit all the most important points. And I spend every day out there this time of the year from 8-10 hours and I can add nothing to your advice.
But I do have to ask you (as I have many of my mushing friends up North) Why do you have beard and mustache to collect the snot and moisture to freeze on your face? 😆

PS was that a leather wrap repair on the stock handle of the long gun?
in reply to: Backcountry College – Navigation II #57899Check out “The Natural Navigator” Tristan Gooley. Some neat stuff from the old ones, a good read, and it even has pictures to illustrate, so Dave and Bruce should be able to follow along:D.
Telling time: your arm extended with index and little finger spread wide subtends an arc on the sky of 15 degrees. The distance of the sun’s apparent movement in one hour (hence our time zones). Using your fingers as dividers you can walk the sun down to sunrise or sunset and calculate the time to either event if you know time of sunrise/set. More useful you can estimate remaining daylight hours for construction of shelter. and gathering firewood. If horizon is behind mountains just guesstimate where it is.

A winter without something to read is a frightful concept. PM your subjects of interest and mailing address I likely have some that can send you from my library. Just got a new one from the Mrs. on particle physics and the LHC which is very readable.

in reply to: Bear spray videos #54849Bruce–be careful more and more reports of “ice bears” with warming periods during winter.

Check the link–it appears that PLOS fits our definition of an appropriate peer reviewed publication. My brother in law retired Doc. highly recommends it. Says it isn’t contaminated with industry money.

in reply to: On TeeVee hunting heroes #54835Ice storms are pretty common here last few years. Routine the same as any other day–feed, water, poop the dog yard give them all a good loving, bring in two or more for the evening. Bad one today 1/4 inch of ice on truck, 4-6inches of snow on top–you take some time to read after the NPR talk shows in the morning—good day to re-read Coming Home to the Pleistocene, Paul Shepard. You gotta love it.
Oh and sneak out and shoot a few cold shots in back yard.

in reply to: On TeeVee hunting heroes #53721Duncan is right on. Disagree with Bruce–how someone speaks can be vitally important–there is a whole science on it–and trust me folks when your negotiating through a 3rd party translator–you want to hear all the voice inflections and the meaning of every word. Determining ignorance or brilliance may mean life or death.8) Uh think I’ve drifted off thread trust “mom” isn’t hovering over that delete key:D:D

in reply to: Cougars, livestock and hunting #53703So the ? is how do we get wildlife management back in the realm of science and out of politics. I know Forager and all of BHA are somewhat working to that end—but is there some way we can organize a united front that supports that goal?
New to this arena (only back on the trad hunt for 3yrs) but willing to support the attack. Comments or guidance.

I also hunt in black bear country–2 yrs ago a 16 yr. old girl took a 675lb bear with gun–picture on front page of local paper–thought it was a grizzly. A couple of years ago I was following and tracking a male blackie (300lbs from track depth) called him Bruce the bear. One day he turned on me at 10 yards and growled “leave me alone”.
Point is I carry bear spray even with black bears–they will prey on homo. Stump busting in the spring with blunts doesn’t give enough fire power spray is effective—used it once on myself:roll: Check the wind my friends:D

in reply to: Wood Arrow #51502First, welcome aboard cavscout. You will likely hear advice from those much more experienced then I But–I went through this process about 3 yrs. ago. Started with those 125 gr. points then after reading Doc. Ed’s data and listening to Dave P beat knowledge into this jarhead, went to 300gr. up front. Kinda like an APDS (sabot, gunner.) Put the weight up front and all things work out nicely and tuning is much easier.
And save yourself some $ cause eventually you will go there.

There are a lot of folks here that spend much more time then I have hunting and their opinions in footwear are all valid. However—8) I have a bit of time walking in the tundra of the Aleutians (2years) and mushing from Prudhoe bay to Fairbanks. If you want foot wear that keeps you warm and dry in cold -50 and wet +30 and rain, and on ice snow, and such–I will say it again and last time check out steger mukluks– moosehide, rubber covered, camuks extreme. Weigh about 2 1/2 lbs for a pair. Yes a bit pricey but my present pair is 5yrs. old. That light weight will surprise you. So strap on those ole lug soles and all that weight.
I have never had cold feet and I disagree with Don Thomas and the Tip of The Week. Sorry Doc–just my opinion.

this is one of the most intelligent and meaningful discussions I have had the pleasure of eavesdropping on for years.
I am indeed proud to be associated with all of you.

PS. Clay you will never reach the heights of those teevee heroes as long as you persist in using that silly magnet and piece of paper with squiggly lines to find your way.:D
