Alex knows of what he speaks. I would recommend you visit the Ashby reports under the feature heading lots of good info there and the good Dr will respond to your questions.
I am a firm believer in what is stated there and my elk arrows are carbon
Easton 500 (trad only from 3 rivers) cut to 29 3/4 which is what I what I ended up with after using Troy Breeding’s process as depicted on the Tuff Head web site. My total arrow weight is 750 gr. with a 100 gr brass insert 100 gr steel adapter and a 300 gr tuff head (two blade single bevel). Giving 500 gr up front with A/A 4 fletch (again explained on the Tuff head site or the Ashby study) total EFOC for my setup is 23 1/2%. By the way the video’s are very informative and good entertainment. Almost forgot I shoot that load out of a 49# 52″ Elkheart long bow.
I use the same weight on my target points and my blunts for stumping. And for white tail and turkey—there is no such thing as overkill on our sacred game.
Of course the point here (pun intended) is that we want to ensure the cleanest most ethical kill possible.
Enjoy the ride there is more information and friendly advice here then you can absorb.

Just back at 1500 today from Key West boat is all nestled in and hopefully secured for Hurricane season. Strung the bow and first shot was on target so put it back on rack–why tempt perfection:D
Have a couple of weeks to get this place in shape then fly to Durango on 1 June for road trip to Glacier for some grizzly viewing.
will get caught up on the site in next few days.
The hunter home from the hills and the sailor home from the sea.:D
Your arm extended at full reach with your thumb up and little finger pointed down subtends an angle at infinity of 15 deg. That coincidentally is the time the sun apparent movement makes in one hour (hence our time zones). Check sunrise and sunset time before heading out and by using that personal set of nav dividers you can walk the sun down or up the horizon to pretty accurately tell the time. More importantly in a survival situation one can figure how much time to sunset and when you need to start building a shelter for the night. When it’s overcast or just cloudy you just wing it–with practice you can get pretty good with it in home terrain, takes some adjusting when traveling.
From a personal note I only wore a watch when timing had to be to the second for air or artillery support/control. Not needed now and haven’t worn one in over 15 years.
You that are interested in natural navigation may want to check out the website for the Polynesian crew who are circumnavigating with no instruments. I never carry a digital device in the woods—find that just being there makes me more AWARE of what’s happening.

Yep search took almost two years. Getting her ready to leave for the summer has been some effort coupled with next two days of rain. Must admit it’s nice to be out in the rain and 75 deg. temps. Cool work.
Connection to the sky is iffy here so may be awhile between posts. I did here from ausjim yesterday he made Lt and first assignment down under is leading an inf. platoon and then into intel. A big congrats to our Jim.

in reply to: What ya got goin? #43935Been an incredible 3 weeks. Long story short we bought the boat and cruised her from Marathon to NAS Boca Chica last Fri. Not sure how long we will be here making Sotolas our home. It appears I will miss spring turkey. Visit Facebook Linda Herdering for some awesome pictures of the story. https://www.facebook.com/linda.herdering . Private stateroom and head forward for guests.
As soon as I figure out this navy WiFi will spend some time getting caught up on the site.

in reply to: What ya got goin? #11322Leaving Thurs for Marathon Key Fl. Haul out, survey, sea trails scheduled a week from Tues. If all goes as expected we will complete contract on 36′ Marine Trader trawler shortly there after. Then cruise her 50miles to our berth at Boca Chica naval air station in Key West. Likely spend a couple of months getting her outfitted to the “Admirals” satisfaction before returning to the mountains and missing spring turkey season.
Probably be absent from the forum for awhile. I will check in when we return. You all have fun.
