I was blessed to spend some time out here last week- beautiful California country!
Can you determine what we were chasing from looking closely at this pic?
in reply to: Snake skins on glass bows #60313David- if the picture was bigger you would be able to read the sign which says, To Hell for Sure. And that is what it felt like after 12 miles with a 65 pound pack.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #15317Congrats on a successful raffle adventure! That is a beautiful bow.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #47660Prepped and applied a red-tail boa skin for my Cocobolo three piece that I made. The Boa happened to be a snake I raised and died after giving birth.
The right limb is the upper limb and also the head end of the Boa – the left is the tail section. She was about 7 feet long and about 4 inches in diameter.
in reply to: Hello from Washington! #23235Greetings – great to have another tradbow brother!
Are you a recurve or longbow guy? After asking the question I saw your signature noting longbow. So now the question what longbow do you favor?

For the side plate, I’ve been using painters tape for a couple years. Thin and very durable. Easy to peel off when the time comes. You can also use the tape to make a small bump under the side plate or rest for better clearance. Just role it up to the appropriate size.
Steve – can you give us a pick of the painters tape side plate? I am curious…

I’ve been thinking about trying it with the fiberglass wrap available at Lowes or Home Depot for like ten bucks.
Nice job!
Steve – yes I followed Big Jim’s method and used a quarter inch pice of glass in the riser as well as the fiberglass / carbon fiber wrap. On this first one I used hand files to relieve the wood from around the grip. For the next one I will be purchasing a inch belt sander.
Alex – it is still not a BW but I am actually very pleased with how well my first try came out. I know now how to improve upon the process to get even closer.

in reply to: Mountain Cuisine? #8360Most of my multi day hunts require that I pack into the back country and carry my food. I have lived off the freeze dried just fine, however I definetly have some meals I prefer over others. One thing I have done to stretch the food is to pick up some min rice that comes in single packets which you drop in boiling water for a minute. Doing that can stretch the meals and save on overall cost.
More recently I purchased a dehydrator and have made my own meals. I can make a nice pasta dish and dehydrate it then bring it back to life with some hot water. These taste better and don’t have all the salt that the store bought meals have. I make my meals just prior to the hunt and they last fine for the number of days I am out.
in reply to: My new Longbow arrived today! #18496Very nice Alex! That bow is in for some amazing adventures.
I am building a bow for myself right now using Ironwood and hickory in the riser and Shedua veneers. It will be about the same in specs as yours as far as draw weight and length at 62″. It will be my first attempt at a take-down sleeve similar to the BW design. I have always loved their bows but have not had the pleasure of owning one.

I read about that being a problem…the solution is just don’t miss lol 😀
Actually I have had a number of deflections off the ball…I shoot it mostly with a backdrop or hay bale etc. I like to hang it from my hay bale by the rope handle. I have taken the ball out for a hike in the foothills and the deflection shots don’t go far, but if you are in tall grass it can be hard to find the arrow. I have not had a deflection shot off the top of the ball- I suppose that might result in a launched arrow.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #14297Hey Bruce really good to hear from you! Sorry to hear of the unfortunate biking adventure. I am sure it is a blessing to be on the recovery side of things and able to pull back on the longbow.
