I have a few…first and most likely to happen is an Elk hunt. Next would be a Alaska moose hunt. Then there is the always dreamed of African hunt for a cape buffalo. But if I make the Elk hunt I can met the Lord happy.

They are so different here. Unless you have an outstanding bird dog they are nearly impossible to get to hold for a point. Woodcock will hold tight for the dogs but not the grouse. They really screw with the dogs. My Dad has been hunting grouse for 40 years and after many dogs has had only two that could pin them down regularly. Usually by the time the dog can figure it out it is to old to hunt anymore. But man they are fun to hunt. I did mention hunting them with my longbow behind the dogs to my Dad. He laughed for a good five minutes.

Ultra extreme front of center,Troy is the one to ask about it, something like 30% foc. He had a name for the arrow he made but I can’t recall what it was. Where do you hunt your birds? I have never been out west but have heard the ruffed grouse out there act nothing like in the northeast. Here they are lovers of the thickest cover and are as weary as a whitetail. Friends that I know that go out west say they will flush at your feet and land in a nearby tree and just look at you. But I could be wrong…anyone hunt ruffed grouse out west and how do the act?

Having spent most of my hunting life chasing grouse and woodcock here in PA…I can’t imagine hunting them with a bow. I am meaning while they are in flight. I could only hit 1 out of the 3 or so I got shots at with my shotgun. I wish you the best of luck and can’t wait to here how the hunts go. My advice is to use an UEFOC arrow to help over come the brush. Again , good luck.

I was able to get to ETAR this year but just for a day. I went yesterday and it was a blast. The weather was outstanding and made for a great time shooting the course on top of the mountain (a hill to you boys by in the Rockies). It is a 3 hour trip to Coudersport from my house so I hit the road at 0500 hrs. As I entered the northern counties of Pennsylvanian I began to see numerous Elk. It was a nice sight to look into field off the roadway and see nice groups of them. I also saw countless deer and a black bear on a bank of a creek. I arrived at ETAR a little after 0800 hrs and met up with a good friend that was camping there with his family. We took off for one of the lower 3D course straight away. When we finished we went back to his camp sight and picked up his daughter to go shoot a course on top the mountain. We rode the ski lift up and then shot our way down. It took an hour or so and it was already time for lunch. I made some deer meatloaf for the trip and enjoyed and tasty sandwich. After some coffee and some of the best cookies I ever had we went to the vendor tents. We looked at the bows, gear, and clothing. There was a lot of great stuff. I picked up a Helle Fjellbekk knife which really looks and feels like a solid knife. I am planning on starting to quarter my deer in the woods this year to get some practice for an eventual elk outing in a few years. We then went to shoot again but the ski lift was down so we went to cardiac ridge shoot. It was up hill most of the way and for me the best course to shoot. I liked getting the heart beating and sucking wind and then shooting. I did well which pleased me. When we finished the ski lift was running again so we hoped on it and shoot one more course from the top. When we finished up we headed back to camp and I finished off my meatloaf for dinner. I head home at about 1930. On the way home I stopped at an elk viewing area and saw 7 giant bulls in velvet. The elk here are rigorously managed and limitedly hunted so the bulls get monstrous. I then head south again and had a small 2 year old bear lumber across the road in front of me. It was a great day and I and hoping I can stay a night next year.

I kept an eye out for Col. Mike and Alex. I counted coup on the Colonel’s car but since I had no idea what he looked like I never found him. However, after seeing Dave’s picture of the Colonel at the shoot I did in fact see him. I was on my way to the ski lifts the second time when they weren’t working and I saw him standing by the lodge. It was just a passing glance but the way he wore his hat stood out (not many guys do the hat grease unless they are military).

Over all a great day trip. Sorry for not opening my mouth and saying hi to you Mike…I know what you look like now…next year!

I could be mistaken but I have watched the video a little more and not to beat a dead horse…but…it looks like the miss is caused by branches in between him and the buck. You can see them moving after the arrow pass by them. Just another thing to check for to help reduce wounding and misses. Can’t catch everything all the time but something like the limbs from a stand should be addressed when it is put in or at least aware of the location of them. That said, I really enjoyed this video a bunch and cannot wait to see Clay’s film and The Good Hunt.

I use fluorescent orange nocks, fletch, and wraps. I can see them so well in flight and in the weeds beyond the target!!!

I thought the same thing Jim…a few replays and the arrow floots right over the top of the buck’s neck. Hard to tell with the white fletching against the snow. I really like the burning of the arrows, it looks really nice. It is a good video to share with the non trad guys I know to nudge them a little from the status quo.

Never done arrows yet but when I refinished the stock on my rifle I used spray on stain remover and it did a wonderful job…if all else fails…start over! good luck!!!
