I recently did the same. I shoot a Kodiak Hunter, 43 lbs at my (finally!)measured 27 inch draw. I have a Shakespeare Sierra at about 42 lbs at my draw. I found a great deal on a Kodiak Magnum, 53 lbs @ 28 so I’m pulling about 50 even. It’s not a takedown, but I can comment on the difference in my release with the heavier poundage on my fingers. I shoot the Magnum better than my lighter bows, because, for me, I get a more consistent release. No problem drawing and holding the 50 lbs at anchor, since the lighter bows were a good workout to prepare.

I hunt in a zone with an unlimited antlerless regulation. I only take what I can personally eat, since the deer hunters I’ve had experience with don’t like venison, and I’m alone in my love for the meat it seems.

For me, and me only, I am unsure about taking antlerless deer who have been bred during the rut. I took my first recurve antlerless deer a few weeks ago. I shot a small, immature doe. I needed the experience of shooting a deer with my recurve, but didn’t want to shoot a pregnant doe. I don’t think this one was old enough to have been bred. I have the meat, and the skin is with an uncle who makes stuff with it.I teared up a little when I shot her. I won’t kill again until I run out of meat. I hunt almost everyday.I’ve avoided the property where the 6 pointer busted me during the rut. I will hunt there during winter bow.

I haven’t read it yet. Trip to the bookstore for me tomorrow. My personal style is funny looking, and I receive looks of amusement and some laughs, but it works for me. I’m reminded of Ed Norton when I prepare to take a shot.

I practice from my stool, as well as my pad sitting on the ground, along with standing, so my foot position isn’t as important to me as aligning my upper body consistently. I make sure my posture is straight, as if I’m balancing a book on my head. For some strange reason I need to stretch my arms a couple times ( Ed Norton). I nock the arrow, and hold bow arm straight out. Keeping my body rigid, I reach out and grab the string, pull to anchor as I’m concentrating on the spot.

I hold for a second focusing on the spot. My release is a surprise when it happens correctly. Haven’t figured out how to get a deer to stand there while I complete my shot sequence.

I’m still an amateur àt shooting recurves. I pad the limbs at the grooves, and use beaver fur silencers. So far my Sierra is whisper quiet, Kodiak Hunter has a twang.

I’m with tuxdad. When I get within spitting distance of game animals without them spooking, I count it as a success. That said, I haven’t killed my buck this year, and I can’t wait to see him next season!

Merry Christmas to all of my new friends! I gave myself a couple good gifts this year.

That’s a beautiful work of art. May I ask what length string it takes?

On my table in front of me now is Welding for Dummies, Shots at Whitetails by Larry Koller, and Traditional Bowhunters magazine. On the bookshelf you can find stuff such as Elmer Keith’s Sixguns, Advanced Custom Rodbuilding by Clemens, Ruark’s Old Man and Boy 1&2, a history book so old that toward the end there was a question of whether Geronimo was gonna stay on the reservation in Florida this time, many fishing books fresh and salt, Corbett, Buck, Geirach, Zane Grey, McManus, Heavey, Lamour, just from memory without getting off the couch to look. Anybody around here interested in Freemasons? I have two very strange books, kinda like rituals from the 1920s.

Oops, only one is from 1920, the other must be newer since it mentions a big meeting that took place in 1936. Not looking to sell, but would like to get them back to the lodge. It seems wrong to have them. Can’t read one since it’s in Latin?

I sit on a small folding stool that has a shoulder strap for transport. Once I get the string for my 52″ Sierra, I’ll use a foam pad similar to a stadium or jonboat seat pad and I’ll get on the ground like I did when gun hunting.

I’ve been driving myself plumb crazy trying to shoot better. 15 yards seems to be my nemesis. The funny thing is, I’m hitting very well at 20 yards. Six day firearm just ended here in Jersey, so I’ll have the woods to myself again except for the bear hunters. I don’t hunt bear, I get too cold.

As for shooting, I’ve been working on form and fine tuning arrows. My Kodiak Hunter says 46 under the plate. 30 inch carbon .500 spine arrows. I don’t know my true draw length. I’m figuring about 27. I’m pretty sure my anchor was a problem. I was yanking all the way back to my earlobe, and used 125 grain points because they were flying straight, 175 were showing weak. I changed to index finger to corner of mouth, and 175 grn points because now 125 is showing stiff. Shooting is much better.

Great story of a great hunt. Awesome pics. Looks like a couple places I’ve hunted in Gainesville. Those old stone walls make great blinds when combined with a tree. Safe trip to you.

Yesterday’s cold shot at 15 yards. 2 inches left of the 1 inch diameter dot which was my aim point, elevation perfect. I firmly believe that what I’ve read on this forum has helped my shooting. What’s funny is, I shot two at 20 yards and was a measured inch high of my intended aim point.

Modern fabric performance base layer. Black Levis, wool socks with goretex hikers. Flannel shirt with a weird camo pullover that was on sale at Dicks over it and a second hand camo wool vest. This is my first year wearing camoflage. Neck gaitor/ face mask and a knit skull cap because my Stormy Kromer brim interferes with my string at full draw. It’s been very warm in Jersey this year. When it’s cold it’s a woolrich Pennsylvania tuxedo for me with 1000 gram thinsulate boots.

My motivation is just getting out into the woods, observing nature. The kill is secondary for me. I grew up with a grampa and 5 uncles who hunted and trained my cousins and myself to observe gun safety. Anybody caught handling weapons in an unsafe manner got the switch the first time. The second time was a lifetime firearm ban. Grandpa, RIP , had a lot of influence, and our parents agreed with the ban. I’m the only one who continues to hunt and I never got the switch. I don’t remember NOT hunting, I’ve been hunting so long. I turned 50 this year.

My gun seasons ran from the first week of the rifle season in Maine, then small game to stay occupied til 6 day, then a week up in Hainesville. I began wondering about archery because I have never taken a shot at a deer over 40 yards away. In Maine I couldn’t even see 20 yards away. I find aperture sights to be very adequate and have only fired a scoped rifle once, and got a little bloody doing it ha-ha. I began archery 2 years ago with a borrowed compound. I didn’t like it. Too much crap on it, using a release, peep and sights, etc. The stickbow is my weapon of choice now.
