Happy deer season everyone. Here we go again. I’m shooting my kodiak magnum this season. I bought my first longbow, and shoot it very well, but my center serving decided to unravel the other day. I’m in an earn a buck zone. Gotta shoot a doe first. Of course tonight a nice 6 point buck came within 50 feet,This guy is the forkhorn I let go last year, I’m pretty sure.

Good to hear from you, Steve! I should have brought my bows, but as you all figured out by now, I’m kinda stupid. I hadn’t thought about you guys being scattered all over the country, and I could’ve gotten valuable tips from all different hunters and shooters in all different terrain that exists in this great country. I’m betting I was really close to some of you. My shooting is still terrible with my Kodiak Hunter, so I won’t hunt with it. My Kodiak Magnum is shooting lasers into tight little groups at 15 yards, when I pay strict attention to my form, which is more consistent now. Hunting with the KM this year. Going shooting now. Trying to figure out why I’m shooting accurate, smooth, and more consistent using the swing draw, rather than holding the bow out and reaching to it to draw. It doesn’t make sense.

I’m pretty sure lots of hunters have killed deer while wearing watches. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine it being a factor. The only reason I don’t wear one is I’m a gorilla who forgets to take a watch off before I fix cars, fall in rivers, and a whole bunch of other things I do that destroys nice things. Pocket watches are in the same category as wristwatches as being destroyed by me. When hunting the cell phone stays in the car, and I carry a fancy compass and a pocketknife.

Hi everybody. Been awhile since I’ve posted. I’m off for the Summer because I now work for a university. On May 20 I left NJ and drove to Crescent City CA, camping all the way.I rolled into Crescent City on day 6. I then camped all the way down the coast for another 5 weeks until I hit San Diego, then took interstate 40/ route 66 home.

I bought Arrow Dynamics green letter Nitro Stingers tapered spine arrows. So far all good shooting them full length with 125 points from the 50 lb KM. I’m proud to say my very first shot after getting home from my trip was within a 4 inch circle at 15 yards. Not bad for not touching a bow in close to 2 months. Please don’t ask how I shot yesterday, though!

Welcome! Give it time and I bet you wind up with more than one bow. Ask me how I know. I have 4 now. I agree with these fellas when they say just when you start shooting really great, something happens and it all falls apart. It happened to me. I resisted the urge to go buy a crossbow, kept at it, and now I’m shooting better than I ever did.

Thanks everybody. Wasn’t too sure about the term heterodyning, but it sure worked. Yesterday I had the twang even when I only drew the string an inch and let go. I put the fur at the 1/4 positions and wrapped down to the sixths, or very close to it. Now I draw back about an inch and get a dull thunk, the twang is gone. I won’t be playing banjo anymore.

Long John, thanks for the advice. I’m gonna try moving my fur silencers to the halfway position. I think I have them too close to the tips right now. I’m playing with arrow weight, as well. I’m shooting the same arrows out of my 50lb Magnum as I did with my 43 lb Hunter. Those weights are at 27″ draw. I added about 46 grams of weight to 2 arrows and left 2 alone. Still the same twang. I can play a mean version of dueling banjos.

I noticed, for myself, that I rush my shots for some reason when I have a quiver full of arrows. When I shoot one, and then retrieve it and shoot it again, I’m much better at performing my shot sequence. Specifically follow through. I find myself dropping my bow arm and reaching for another arrow way too fast when I’m shooting a group. This is why I feel my most important arrow is the very first one, cold.

My first year bowhunting. First and last time using a compound. I was hunting a particular, very large bodied 8 pointer. Finally, everything came together. I was in a pop up blind, sitting on a stool, with the window zipped down so the front of the blind was open. The buck showed up, and I waited til he got in front of the open window perfect broadside shot at 15 yards. I had buck fever, and had forgotten that when the sight was on the deer, the arrow was still much lower. I drew and released and the arrow went maybe 10 feet and hit a seriously heavy patch of brush, the arrow shot straight up, and the buck stepped behind a blowdown, with only his head visible. He stood there looking at me I nocked another arrow, and cursed the popup blind because I couldn’t move to get in position for another shot. I put the popup blind away for good as well. Been hunting with recurves out of natural cover ever since.

I can give you lots of tips on how to miss. I’ll probably be there Saturday morning around 8. I like to get there before people show up with compounds and crossbows. This afternoon I’m hunting a private piece I have permission to hunt.

Hello Andrew! I shot the middle completely out of the 15 yard target over there. Now I’m concentrating on the smaller bulls around the center. I was shooting daily until I recently got a job. I was kinda retiring, but I’m only 50 and I began to feel useless. All I’ve done since October is hunt, fish, and shoot bows.

Now that I’m working again I want to go back to hunting, fishing, and shooting bows.??

I find I need more practice stalking, and still-hunting. Somehow, over the years my equilibrium went way off, and I stagger somewhat while trying to place my feet slowly. I’m a bull in a china shop in the woods. I need to learn to slow down, and stop using ambush techniques as my crutch.

That being said, it’s difficult to play the wind and sun while still-hunting in a limited amount of space such as we have here in Jersey. In Maine, sure, no problem in Northern Aroostook County where I’ve run around all week without seeing another Hunter, and I never ran out of land. The private land in Jersey where I’m hunting today, I must use ambush techniques. I practice from sitting on the ground, sitting on a stool, and standing. I went in last week and made sure I had clear shooting lanes so I can ambush my buck I’ve been hunting from a different spot. I make sure there’s nothing in my way for drawing my bow, and am able to shoot with a target type stance.

I haven’t quieted mine down adequately yet, but I’m working on it. I added beaver balls, and am planning limb pads next. I have to add weight to my arrows, which should help. Currently braced at 7 5/8. The Kodiak Magnum I bought is a mid 70s greenie. I wanted a short bow that matched the grip on my Kodiak Hunter, and the Hunter happens to be a greenie as well.
