Ok, now you have me making some !!!

You mean like a Sawzall blade? I don’t think they are quite wide enough. In CA they have to be over 1″ wide.

No, not sawzall blades, they were from a big cut-off type saw in a machine shop. They were about 2.5 inches wided and I’m guessing about 40 or 50 thou. in thickness.

I shoot a Martin/Howatt X-200 and I love it. Great shooting bow and although I got it used, I have priced out new Martin bows and they are very well priced.I just took a 250 pound Black Bear with my X-200 on the 1st and I plan to hunt with it for many years to come. I posted a pic with the bow in the photo galleries on here

Man !! I can absolutely relate to how hard it is to make that choice ! Great patience and restraint. As for the long weekend, I took a nice 250 pound Black Bear on the opening day here (sept. 1st). I posted a photo on the gallery here.

Getting fired up for bear season here. Sept 1st !! Got some real good prospects on trail cam. Gonna guide my brother and his boy for bear 2 weeks into the season also. Then, I turn my attention to deer. There also seems to be a bit of a rise in the rabbit population around here so I can’t wait to try my recurve on a few rabbit/grouse hunts.

I love this time of year !!!

Ever tried brain tanning ? The indians used to use the brain matter to tan their hides. It has tanic acid. It really isn’t all that hard to do, just a bit time consuming but it is a very inexpensive way to preserve a hide. I’m told that there should be enough brain matter in any given animal to tan it’s hide.If not, you can always get it from a butcher pretty cheap.

Last year ,while I was bear hunting, I had a raven flying around and trying his best to spot me in the tree stand. It was like he knew I was there but couldn’t quite see me or tell just where I was.Anyway, after about 2 hours of flying around me and landing in about every tree in the immediate area looking for me, he set down on a branch only about ten feet above me.Now at this point, I was pretty sure he either never spotted me or had just plain given up his search so I didn’t even move to look, I just sat motionless. After several minutes I heard a strange noise. And then again, and again. It was almost like air whistling through a hole and it seemed to be coming from where the raven had perched. My curiosity got the best of me so I slowly craned my head around to look up where the raven landed earlier.

It was now clear to me that he never found my position because he was sound asleep and SNORING directly above me!! Of course I had to try and get this on video so I reached for the camera but in my haste, he awoke and crowed his displeasure as he flew off.

I may not have gotten a bear last year but I sure am glad I went to that stand , that day !

I used rubber cat whiskers for a long time and an old timer showed me his bow at a 3D shoot one day. He used 2, 1/4 inch rubber bands cut from a bicycle inner tube.Just looped it around the string and pulled it through itself.I pondered this and decided to try it with actual rubber bands. I’ll never by cat whiskers again! Those rubber bands work just as well, if not better than the whiskers.

I put my shafts through a cardboard box and spin them with my cordless drill. I dip them first or spray them. Then poke them through the box, put the drill on one, lock the trigger and start painting stripes. I sometimes place indicating marks on the side of the box to keep the spacing consistent. This works well for me.

I switched from compound to recurve last year and I went with a Martin/Howatt x-200.This has been an EXCELLENT bow and very reasonable cost. I think the dozen carbon shafts I bought for it actually cost more than the bow did. My compound weight was 60# and my recurve is 40#@ 28″ however….being 6’4 I have a long draw length. I maxed my compound out to 31″ and I actually draw the recurve to 31.5. I figure this puts my 40# bow to more like 46 or 47#. This has been very comfortable to draw and with a properly tuned heavy FOC arrow, plenty enough lethal. I wouldn’t go taking a 40 or 50 yard shot like I can with the compound but inside 25 yards, there isn’t an animal in my neck of the woods that I wouldn’t hunt with it.

Bottom line, try a few bows and see what feels “right” for you.If you have friends with trad bows, test shoot them and see what you like or don’t. Don’t get hung up on draw weight and arrow speed. As long as your arrows are tuned well and you keep the front heavy, they’ll penetrate very well. Even from a lighter bow.Like I said, my 47# recurve will double lung a deer or bear just as well as my compound does inside 25 yds.

Hope you find the bow that suits you and happy hunting !!

I started out shooting my recurve split finger and had the same issue with poor arrow flight. I found the teachings of Rick Welch to be AMAZINGLY HELPFUL !! If you get a chance, you should check him out on youtube. He REALLY changed my way of thinking and shooting. He has a few videos and also does a shooting school. He also builds some of the very best bows money can buy.I’m not too sure which is the proper or best way to draw a bow but I do know that “for me”…..shooting three under works far better and more accurate

I shoot a 40# Martin recurve with gold tip 3555 sharts. Full length with 5 inch feathers and bear razorheads up front. They fly real nice. Keep in mind though that my draw length is 31 inches so full length works well for me. Might not be so with a shorter draw.

Don’t take this for anything more than another beginner’s advice, BUT, I cannot imagine anyone holding a 65# draw for more than 10 seconds and still shoot accurately. Don’t set your expectations too high here. Secondly, the best thing I ever did to help my shooting was to follow the teachings of Rick Welch. You should look him up. He WILL make you a better shooter.

I’ve also heard of people getting a vitamin b-12 shot from their doctor. Apperently, insect repulsion is a very convenient side effect of the shot.
