in reply to: blackbear hunting #23128

I do both spring and fall spot and stalk bear hunts out west every year. Probably one of my favorites hunts to do each year. We have great luck getting in close, on the ground, in their back yard. I have done bait hunts in Idaho and spot and stalk hunts in OR, ID, CO, and AZ. I probably will never shoot another bear over bait myself, but continue to help others do so. I just prefer the spot and stalk. Harder? Yes! But worth it.

Depends on what type of hunt you are looking for and where you want to hunt.

If you want to learn a bit about the old black bear check out “A Shadow in the Forest, Idahos Black Bear” by Rohlman and Beecham. It the published findings of one of the most extensive studies on wild black bear behavior, habits, habitat uses, etc. Very science based, but very informative.

        Howdy,

I am a man with issues I have been told by many. They tell me that hunting and the outdoors should not run any man’s life the way it runs mine. I think they are just jealous that they are missing the big picture!

So in a nutshell I am a 32yr old Wildlife Habitat Biologist, that moonlights as a hunting guide, free-lance videographer, editor, african safari booking agent, and hunt aholic. I have PROGRESSED from modern firearms, to high tech compounds, to a recurve (best $20 and case a beer I ever spent), to a longbow, to beginning to make my own equipment. Spend as much time behind the video camera and editing station as I do the bow now a days.

Married the best looking, smartest, most understanding woman that ever walked the planet. The only time she complains about my 200+ days per year in the field is when she doesn’t get to go with me or I track mud in the house!

Call Oregon home, but have galavanted all over the west. Even took up roots in NM, CO, and ID. College a lot of it, but hunting the rest. Love those western skies!

Anyone done the over the counter archery hunt in Arizona before? I have heard it may be hard to find a buck, but the country is beautiful and the pressure not too bad. Any first hand experience?

Eastern Colorado would be an great hunt. I lived in CO for a while and did a lot of predator calling in NE CO. That would be a fun spot and stalk hunt where you could get away from everyone for a while!

            Great idea.

And for heading east, that is something I hadn’t thought about. I guess it is way too easy for a westerner like me to get caught up in the stereo type that you have to go to the Western US to get into vast tracts of public land. The NE in particular has some large areas that would be cool to explore and hunt! Got me thinking now.

Thanks for the insight. I cut them at pretty high elevation in the mountains and the plants have just started to bud out so sap shouldn’t be extremely high. But definately not cut while dormant. I will give it a whirl and see what happens!
