I shoot a recurve instinctively and started off with a relaxed high grip, as generally recommended, but found i was getting a slight torque on the release. So i’ve moved towards a lower grip which gives me more handle-on-bone contacted and feels firmer for me even with a relatively relaxed grip. I’m keen to try a longbow in the future and reckon this style of grip might help with transitioning between the two.
in reply to: How Was Your Winter? #9587Very mild winter here in Ireland with the upshot of being unusually dry – our norm is mild and wet to very wet! We were on the west of a blocking high that hit the rest of Europe really hard – even snowed in Rome!
The last two winters were exceptionally hard with a lot of snow – broke a 60 year record with minus 22C recorded, which is crazy for this little island sitting in the gulf stream.
in reply to: Why onestring? #62608It’s the only way I know – I’ve never even held, let alone shot a compound!
in reply to: arrow length #61405I wish I had such luxuries – I have a 31 inch draw so normally only have an inch to play with unless I go custom 😕

Not that I’m much of whiskey drinker but I am partial to a drop of Bushmills, Black Bush if I have the choice. Jameson 12 year is a nice treat. And I’m not averse to my Scottish cousins either as I do like a dramm of Glenmorangie!
Dave, we’ll have to do an archery exchange as I’m waiting on the lotto numbers so I can do a bowhunt over on your side of the pond! 😉
in reply to: what do your arrows cost? #59272I’m with Ireland on this, nobody should feel guilty spending some money on a healthy outdoor activity! How much is down to the individual. I’ve just ordered a dozen wooden shafts fletched, nocked and field pointed for the equivalent of $80 US. That’s the right amount for my archery but everyone is different.

in reply to: Squirrels 3 Duncan 1 #58877Just made myself a Torges tree seat and have to say it is brilliant simplicity. I was so impressed I emailed Dean to say thanks and let him know that his design is mounted on a big old ash tree in Ireland! 8)
in reply to: shooting hours per week #58868Living in Ireland I have similar weather to Wideangle in Oregon, but I probably get more rain 🙄 so I can shoot outdoors most of the time, which is good as I don’t have enough room indoors. Wind is more of an issue for me – I’m near the coast and it’s always blowing.
I live on a pretty big rural site of almost half an acre so I’ve a bale in the back garden for form practice. When that gets boring I hop over the back ditch and go roving in the fields. My neighbouring farmer has loads of abandoned bales in the field margins which are really handy. I’ll sort out some photos soon to give you guys a feel for the area.
I’m hoping to join a field archery club nearby once the spring arrives – they shoot indoors in the winter which just doesn’t appeal to me. Most of them are stick shooters so should suit me.

in reply to: How many bows do you have? #52587Being a newbie i’ve just one – my cheap and cheerful samick recurve. Although i do have a new set of heavier limbs to fit so some new arrows will be in order too – i’ll be moving to wood shafts, mmm 😀
I’m taking my time on the learning curve before investing in a sexy bow down the line 8)

in reply to: NEW TO TRADITIONAL #50517Beautiful looking bow you have there. I can second Brian Sorrells book, I’m currently following his practice programme and I’m seeing real results. I’ve just ordered a copy of TJ’s book and can’t wait to have a read of it. Even as a beginner the one thing I have learned above anything else is form, form, form! Oh yeah and then some more proper form 😉 Enjoy!
