Impossible question to answer on someone else’s behalf but the advice here is sound. My approach was a cheap takedown recurve where I increased poundage inexpensively by picking up limbs as needed. I’m now comfortably shooting 45lb and eventually hope to acquire a decent bow within this range. Best of luck on your trad adventure and keep us posted – we love hearing and seeing new gear here 😀

A nice piece of history there Larry. It’s interesting to see how bowyers were tackling the takedown format back in the day. Best of luck with the auction and fund raising.

Another vote for a stringer here. The company i bought my recurve from included one with the purchase. I’ve started out using a stringer and wouldn’t dream of not using one now.

Hi Devan and welcome to the site. We share the same surname so i could be your long, long, long lost irish cousin 😉 A few extra details would help – budget, length, other requirements…

It was an excellent interview with a man who seems to be really in tune with his archery and the woods. Well done as always TBM and nice pics Lee 8)

Cool shot R2. I was thinking the same about the arrows in the bow quiver. Amazing how much movement occurs without ever noticing in real time.

                          Agree with Steve.

I’m 6’4″ with 31″ draw and shoot a 66″ recurve which works for me. I have a cheap samick takedown that originally had 30lb limbs that stretched out to 70″ which was a great way to learn proper form. I’ve switched the limbs to 45lb and a total length of 66″ as I said. Keeps things cheap until I’ve earned a real bow 😛

                          Best of luck!

Don Thomas – “Double helix” [africa – quite unique as he does a lot of stalking] and Dave petersons “man made of elk” [great primer on current methods of tradbow Elk hunting and just Elk info}are both topnotch – I have enjoyed everything I have read by both these authors—

A different but I found interesting book on archery is – Timeless bowhunting : the Art ,the Science,& the Spirit by Roy s Marlow – it talks about compounds* as well as tradbow.

Scout, thanks for those. I’ve been very tempted by some of Dave’s books already and will probably purchase sooner than later. I already have Marlow’s book and agree that it is a very informative read – even the science bits are interesting and accessible to trad heads like myself.

Funny, I was gonna post a similar message as I’ve finished a number of bowhunting books and am in need of more! I can thoroughly recommend Saxton Pope’s Hunting with the Bow and Arrow, Don Thomas’s Have Bow Will Travel, Jim Dougherty’s Best of Trails End, and of course Fred Bear’s Field Notes. I’m currently reading Fred Bear’s biography by Kroll. Empire of the Summer Moon is excellent and I’ve just borrowed Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee so that’s probably next on the list…

Keep the recommendations coming please 😀
