in reply to: New to the Trad Scene #29281
It’s a different world, this traditional archery. Welcome. Oh to be 22 and bouncing through the woods with a new bow setup. You are a lucky man. You have a whole lot of future to work with! Keep at it, and try different setups gradually. You fall into a good groove, and develop likes and dislikes natural to you. No Joe Blow on TV to tell you different. Enjoy!
in reply to: Fallen from grace #29267I’ve been watching the Bear hunting trip video’s lately with the wife. She likes those, and even was talking to my mom about them. Classy stuff like that is hard to come by. The Wensel/Mitten team puts out good stuff, however. It’s not as if it’s impossible to do in todays world.
Mr. Thomas doesn’t have to name names cuz I thing it’s one of times when it has multiple applications. Most of these guys come across as just pied pipers for commercial interests.
in reply to: Kalamazoo Traditional Bowhunters Expo #29258Yes – Lots of cash. That’s what I am afraid of. Tough to resist bows in pictures much less when they are in your hands. I get in more trouble with other guys wives when I help them spend their money. A cousin’s wife will hardly hand him the phone when I call. (It’s usually about another hunting trip.) It’s a gift, what can I say. 🙂
in reply to: most challenging animal to hunt? #28851Turkeys aren’t so bad if there are not too many of them together. Then it gets worse exponentially.
One on one, I would say mule deer in the sage or in open country. This would exempt hunting them around any food sources like hay fields and the like. Tough quarry in canyon land I think.
in reply to: Kalamazoo Traditional Bowhunters Expo #28842I am contemplating going for the first time. No more kids sports to attend as they are out of the house, and out of college. Still in the planning stages for attendance though. Trying to convince a compound buddy to ride along. He may be talked into turning to trad. bowhunting. Sort of a sinister plot to take him to such an event. I am guessing it may be difficult to resist ‘the force’ in such a place. 😀
in reply to: New TBM, question for Don Thomas #25062“explaining that he wanted to write for the magazine in order to enhance his prestige and reputation.”
Boy is this ‘want to be contributor’ missing the mark. He has no clue, no clue at all. All glory to the animal hunted and the land that our feet are privileged to travel upon. That is what I like to see in TBM. Leave the ‘look at me types’ to the other magazines. Keep up the good work Mr. Thomas and gang at TBM!
in reply to: A Miss and A Test of Resolve #49249Dump the old compound. Cut the cord. That’s step one. You won’t regret it.
I started on longbows, when to compounds for a number of years, then back to recurves. I haven’t touched a compound in 15 years or so.
Anyone can miss, even compound shooters. But with compounds, the equipment setup is critical. Wood bows, not so much. The simplicity of wood bows tips the accuracy responsibility to you. That’s actually a good thing. So now it’s a confidence factor within you, not with you and the bow. Keep it simpler, and keep practicing. With repetition, comes concentration, and you’ll find that zone or zen feeling with traditional archery. It’s there, you’ll find it.
in reply to: CO last day elk hunt: a story of success #29259A great read, and congrats on a good season. Those blood curdling screams at point blank are something to behold. Elk are magnificent creatures.
in reply to: Just seemed fitting to hunt here with a Longbow! #18242So did you go right, or did your go left?
Hard to turn down either.:Din reply to: Shrew Haven West #18240OOOooo I’m jealous. Chasing game in the mountains. 3 more days of canning and we are done for the year. Looking to hitting the woods in earnest.
Good Luck Fellas.
in reply to: Opening day #18237Good luck to you too Tom.
Fun to get so close you can hear them breathe, see the beads of moisture on the hairs of their chin, and to even see their pupils dilate when they focus in on you. Then you know they are close! Their eyebrows raise a little when they realize that you are trouble and bolt. Who could possibly not find that exciting.
Going out tonight to a different spot. Hope the rain holds off.
in reply to: Glenn St Charles has left us 9/19/2010 #18228Condolences on the loss to Family and Friends
His spirit is free to roam the hills and valleys once again. An adventurer, a pioneer, well remembered by all, a legacy left behind of a gentleman. What more can someone ask for in this life? A full life he had. Rest in peace.
in reply to: Predator Recipes #16438Wow – Nasty list of parasites! Takes coyotes off of my menu.
in reply to: Opening day #16428My home hunting area is earn a buck, and I have no buck sticker. So I went to the best place I know of for does tonight. And, no doe show. I really hate this earn a buck crap. But living in a CWD area, the DNR thinks that this is the ONLY way to cut the deer herd. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. I’m grateful that the deer season has finally opened here in WI.:P
in reply to: Stalk in these? #31608Sure, a blister on the heal isn’t enough. Those look like they could work up blisters between each individual toe. Ouch!!
They look too rubbery to allow the foot to breath. Also, too trendy looking to me. Got rid of my earth shoes many moons ago. I say let someone else test them out for awhile.
