in reply to: "Brave" review #24457
Yes, I have heard that the archery themed movies out have caused many to hit the sporting goods stores looking for archery tackle. They have been asking for bows just like the girl in the movie. This is great as deep connections start early on in life, and last a lifetime. It’s good for archery and bowhunting, I think.
in reply to: What deer do all night #24452Hokey Pokey? HHhmmm could be. I thought that they might be Texas deer line dancing. 🙂
Great Picture
in reply to: Is camo necessary? #18874Haven’t read anything about fabric texture. Stuff that is fuzzy seems to draw me in. Anything to blur their vision a bit, I think is helpful. But that doesn’t have to involve camo, although it probably explains the digitized patterns coming out. I think it is what makes the various plaids work. When looking at a new pattern, I like to back up about 10-20 yards to have a look at it. So many of todays photographic patterns turn into green and brown blobs.
in reply to: How Often Do You Practice? #18865Off season, I try to shoot every other day. During hunting season, it’s a struggle to get myself to shoot, as I instead try to get out hunting. I can deer/rabbit/squirrel hunt right out my back door, so a 1/2 hour hunt after work or before is possible.
in reply to: Mid Summer Lake Tekapo Tahr Hunt – New Zealand #12395Man I guy can really breathe fresh air up there, no? Good pics, and good stalks too. Those Tahr sure are wooly creatures. You’ll get the drop on them again. 🙂
in reply to: ATVs on public lands #46698When it comes to hunting out west, the ATV’s belong back home in the garage. Plain and simple. As they say, “Use the Quads God gave you!”
in reply to: Helle knife kit #37527Thanks to all involved with this thread. I have always wanted to build a knife from a flat blade, and I do better with illustrations.
in reply to: Thanks, Dave! #27789Ditto on the “THANKS DAVE!” But it’s a big world out there, and we all wonder off from time to time. But this campfire is always lit. Step up to the fire now and then and let us know how you are doing.
in reply to: Tips for Scouting New Land #21038Take a puff bottle with you. Note general wind direction, then note wind direction of the potential stand site, and your route into the site too. Different? A milkweed fluff w/o the seed can also tell you all sorts of stories on wind direction for a given spot. Sometimes the wind goes straight up after hitting an obstruction or the lip of a small ravine. Straight up is good! Do this stuff now before the leaves pop on the brush, which should be similar to conditions in November. Especially on a ground blind setup. Now is the time to scout, scout, scout. Turkey seasons aren’t open yet, or at least not here in WI. You should have the woods pretty much to yourself.
in reply to: It's getting CLOSE! #21024Eeennie, Meenie, Miney, Moe . . .
Can’t wait for April 11th . . .
The blinds are going up this weekend ! ! ! 😀
in reply to: Where Would You Live? #21012I am lucky to live in a diverse state with liberal hunting & fishing seasons, plenty of game and fish, a considerable amount of public land, and good support networks which continue to protect our right to hunt and fish. That would be a very tough place to leave at retirement time. I love my little piece of heaven in Wisconsin.:D
in reply to: Noteable Quotes! #41758“The only persons behavior you can control is your own. Choose your friends wisely.”
Used to tell that one to my teenagers long ago.
in reply to: PBS and Portland in March? #8516My wife has just informed me that we have two things going on that K-Zoo weekend. One, the kids bought us tickets to a show called the “Blue Man Group” which is coming to our area. Then there is the aforementioned dinner on Sat. night. RATS! This being civilized stuff is tough on me. The advance billing says the group “leaves the entire audience in a blissful, euphoric state.” 🙄
I sure hope somebody tapes Dr. Ashby’s talk to share. Unfortunately, a K-Zoo trip is not in the cards for me this year.:(
in reply to: PBS and Portland in March? #63795I really wish that I could go to Portland, but as you say, a long haul from most anywhere. I want to save vacation days for time afield.
I did go to Kalamazoo last year, and may do so again this year. Of course they have a very special speaker this year in Dr. Ashby. I have an annual dinner I just may play hooky from, and sneak over to MI one night for the show. Cough Cough I feel a cold coming on! 😉
in reply to: Strap-on tree steps #63777I have a set of Deer Me Rope Steps. I think that they were the best made, but unfortunately, seem to be no longer made. If you run into a set of these, grab them. To cinch tight, the poly rope is run through itself so that weight applied to the step cinches it tight. The rubber coating keeps them quiet in the pack, and the rope can be wrapped around the step during transport. Light weight, low impact on the trees, easy to carry. I wish that they still made these. Perhaps a local metal shop can make a set up for you?
I’ll see if I can send you the picture so as not to infringe on a copyright. It is out of an old magazine article.
