in reply to: Why are small game hunter #'s falling? #52447
I can only speak for myself about what I’ve seen and heard, I live in a rural part of Indiana farm country, along the Salamonie river, 35 miles south of Ft. Wayne…..We have plenty of squirrels, and I, as well as many others enjoy hunting them, but Rabbits, now that’s a different story, I’ve lived here 10 days short of 5 years, I hunt the areas 3 reservors, and some private property too, in these last 5 years I have seen exactly 3 rabbits…. and all have been on my property…. none at the reservors… none on private property……..when I was a kid they were everywhere, and I’ve hunted these same areas since then….bet your thinking we have a lot of coyotes…. nope, heard one.. just one in the last 5 years…..but I do see a lot of re-introduced raptors…as they have taken to eating my animals, seems here, if there was more small game to hunt there would be more two legged hunters……….Steve
in reply to: who was your mentor? #51253Clay that happens to me quite often, especially this month…in 5 days it will be 4 years since he left us, seems like only yesterday since I heard his voice though, I miss him dearly, shooting and hunting just hasn’t been the same, I feel so alone now when I do it, but I know he is watching over me, so that does help, but still, I miss my buddy…. Guys, cherish each and every moment with your kids, we have no guarantees in this life, who knows what words will be our, or their last…….Steve
in reply to: who was your mentor? #47892My Father taught me archery, but we only went hunting a couple times..for rabbits, he with a gun, myself with an old glass bow…. but we never went deer hunting, or any other hunting besides the couple times for rabbits… then my son came along and for some reason it sure kicked my hunting into high gear, I guess it hit me that I owed it to him as his father to show my son the ways of the woods, he was just 6 months old when we went the first time, I taught him what I had learned and he taught me a few things too, so we kinda learned together.. for a while……we were seperated for a time due to a nasty divorce, but when he came back to live with me…I found out we had both learned a lot more… it was great…. I had a real hunting buddy that was more than willing to go anytime, anywhere with dad hunting, the hardest part was the shooting, he had the shakes from an early age, we never found out why, but I taught him “the circle” method and it worked very well for him, so well that it followed him into the Army, where he earned some medals with his shooing and some company records, and saved a few lives too…… about a week ago I got wind that they are giving him another medal,I just wish he was still here to recieve it for himself..he passed away April 25th. 2005 ,3 weeks after returning from Iraq, killed by a drunk driver…..I’d really like to think of my son Dustin as my mentor, he taught me more than I taught him, he taught me how to be a father….Steve
in reply to: How many bowyers? #33462I’ve made a few from Elk antlers, but as far as doing a build-a-long, I can’t, these are very hard and labor intensive to build, and I only do one off’s,…no two are the same, so explaining this procedure would require a books worth of info, but I would like to see a build-a-long, as they are very interesting!………Steve
