Awesome! Great pics! You guys are lucky that can hunt out your back door. This year I have a new place and reduced my drive time from 3 hours to 40 minutes. The shorter drive almost feels like a back door hunt.

      Thanks for sharing.

I’ll third it. I’ve tried others but I come back to the Ace Hex. Very hard to beat this head. I like the Magnus blunt with the blade but they were discontinued but still available through some retailers.

You can’t go wrong with the Ace though. I’ve seen them hit rock, bugger up a bit, and still shoot with no problem.

The heat this year has really put the kibosh on the deer. They seem to be moving mostly at night. But on those rare cool wet days boy they move around a lot.

                Good luck with the squirrels!

Have to agree with the heat. Been a big toll on movement. All I saw last weekend were P&Y squirrels too. 😀

Cool front moving in this weekend so hopefully I’ll have a harvest to share. Good luck guys.

in reply to: Long bows #51311

I’ve shot a couple of them and I was pleasantly surprised with the speed of the bow. In my opinion it had a bit of hand shock but not terrible and I was being over critical I am sure. I have given one away to a dear friend and sold the other. I don’t think it is a bad bow and I have shot both better and worse bows in my opinion. The one piece diamond series would be my pick. The other was the desert fox. The friend I gave the diamond series too loves it and has harvested three deer with it now.

It’s a GREAT book! I’d send you mine but I had Dave sign it for me. It’s on the shelf with a few others.

in reply to: Single bevel? #51304

This is my first year with single bevel too. Using two different heads from Abowyer; Brown Bear and Bonehead.

Unfortunately my elk hunt was a bust so no shot results and whitetail hunting here in Oklahoma is just starting to see a little movement and some cooler temps. I hope to have some results VERY soon on a deer and hog. I will keep you posted.

On another note, I was very impressed with the arrow flight of these heads. The new heads are hitting just as my field tips do.

Hhhmmmm…I’m sure there is more to it than the ‘hot’ urine alone. Like posturing of a receptive doe and even maybe the scent she put off from her glands. I’m not any authority on ungulates, but when I think of a doe in heat it reminds me of a female dog in heat and all the male dogs on the block seem to know when they are not able to smell the ground she last visited. Maybe there is some vocal communication (bleating) the doe performs too like a cow elk in estrus.??

Thanks for sharing Steve. You have me researching now. 😕

Can’t you also close the shooting stance a bit to clear the upper body? I know it will also shorten the draw length. This may help and it just a little adjustment.

Any idea what the shelf is cut too? Maybe some 45/50 POC arrows. What is your draw? Need a little more input but you can start with some Port Orford Cedars cut to 29″ in the 45/50# spine and go with a 125gr Magnus Snuffer or Woodsman.

If your bow s cut more to center and your draw is long then you may need a heavier spine weight.

For example, I shoot a three piece longbow that has a deep shelf (not quite center) and it is 58@28″. My draw is 29.5″ and that puts my spine on wood arrows at 70-75 spine.

I had a Mag for a bit and it was plenty fast. My issue was my longer draw (29.5-30″) and it was a 60″ bow and I personally was experiencing some finger pinch. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the bow and maybe the next one I run across will treat me different in the draw. Outside of the finger pinch, the bow was quiet, good looking, fast enough for me (I never chrono’d but guessing with my setup I was at about 185+fps), and just a quality piece of work. It was hard to part with. I’ll have to try a 62″ or 64″ on my next one.

Have not heard about Vanilla but I had an old trapper tell me one time that he used, with much success, strawberry gelatin powder. He would sprinkle around traps and on himself, etc. I played with it last season and not sure it attracted many animals but the deer that came in would put their noses to it and lick and then move on. So, he didn’t spook them. 8)
