in reply to: board bow build question #32013
Thanks….I’ll give it a go….if I can find some….where’s a good place to look? maybe specialty hardwood suppliers?
in reply to: board bow build question #30972Thanks for all the comments….quick report….did a rawhide backing on a red oak board…about 75″ long….went great…tillered to 53lbs @28″….put some stain and gloss to it and was looking great….then….:(….pow…snapped right where the stave and handle meet….very dissapointing as I’m sure you all can attest….thinking about trying to adapt whats left into a take-down with some aluminum rectangular tubing….made 3 oak bows and all 3 failed…was able to keep one going with some glass but it is weakening now. Maybe time to get some real bow wood and properly back it….but dang…thought I had a good one….
in reply to: board bow build question #9388When using glass do you use it as a backing or cover the hole schlameel?

I second Steve’s recommendation to pick of Dean Torges info it is well worth it. I have his video and have watched it multiple times. I typically make glass longbows but lately I have had some fun building some board bows using Osage backed with Hickory.
in reply to: board bow build question #63571thanks for your input…greatly appreciated….guess I’m making and using instead of buying and using…I’m probably too cheap on that front….my only real caveat in materials is not to use PVC though there are some fine ones out there that I have seen….cant seem to drop hundreds of $ on something I can make and have fun in the making…..have made my own arrows….looks easier than it is I have found….they are easy if you dont care how they fly :)…..prolly will end up with a recurve at some point just not there yet…think I may try rawhide for the backing after recommendations from other builders….will see how it turns out….time to find some patience and do it right 🙂
thanks again
