I think it would be great to get a Hickry Stave fer a bow and let er cure out. In the mean time, I would go to Home Depot like these others have recommended and make a Red Oak Board Bow to start. Ya gotta do some sortin, but worth the time. A 1″x2″x6′ Red oak board is bout $6. Ifin ya mess up the Tillerin, its equivelent to a Cheeseburger. Mess up the Tillerin on a Hickry Stave thats been curin fer several months, is a little harder to eat. My first was a Bamboo backed Red Oak bow 47#@28″ “D” style 72″ Tip to Tip. Thats was several years ago, and several bows ago. Was Shootin it today and it still shoots Sweet. I built a 66″ Self Pyramid bow from a 1″4″x6′ Red Oak Board with no backin 43#@28″ and it still shoots great too. Look fer some good staves to make ya a good Self Bow, but dive in, get your feet wet, make some wood shavins and have fun. Ifin ya make a mistake, learn from the lesson, set it in the corner and start on another one.

Wish I could help ya, but boy thats a tough one. I have built a couple of wood laminate bows, but have no experience with Glass. Hope someone can help ya with the repair.
I suspect that the bow is 60″ in length and 43 pounds in draw weight, but not sure. Usually it will have somethin like 43#@28 , which means 43 pounds draw weight at 28 inches. And a number like 60 AMO which represents the lenght of the bow nock to nock. A guideline fer strings is approx. 3″ shorter that AMO length fer longbows and approx. 4 inches shorter fer Recurves. One has to experiment with the string, twisting to adjust it to find the Sweet spot of a particular bow. I think the brace height is approx. 7 inches average fer a recurve, but thats just a guideline. Again its in the tweaking, to find what is best fer that particular bow.

I am bending Hazelnut. I bent the tips some, but think I am gonna give em a second bend, as they didn’t go quite as far as I wanted. Gotta bend the stave at the Handle to line up string. This is my first Hazelnut stave and I want to get it right.

what type of wood are you bending?

I shoot Woodies exclusively!!! To me, its part of the Traditional world. Don’t get me wrong…Carbon and Aluminum arrows are great…I just feel they belong to the Modern bows. Ifin all your interested in is shootin the center out of a target, better jus get a compound bow and be done with it. I left that world behind to become a Traditional Archer. To take up the challenge of learning to shoot with longbow and arrow…No sights, no wheels, and no let off. Am I Good???…Afraid not…But Happy???…You bet ya!!! My goal is to make a well placed shot in the kill zone. Wood arrows are more than up to that task. Plus I get the joy of buildin em and tunin em. Theres a lot more work involved in buildin a good Wood arrow, but a lot more satisfaction as well!!! Course that again is One man’s opinion!
