Basically its fun. Simple fun at that. Not the complicated like hunting can become if you let it. If it wasn’t enjoyable I wouldn’t do it. That and the fact that nothing beats fresh wild game in terms of taste.
in reply to: Wisconsin Albinos #14932Maybe this should be a different thread but I guess the topic is kind of related. Just wondering if anyone here has ever seen a pie-bald turkey. Turkey hunting last spring I saw a turkey that I can explain not other way. That was my impression anyway….I didn’t get a great look at him as he was across a feild on the one occasion I saw him. The owner of the property that I was hunting has seen him a few times and theorized that maybe it was just cross-bred with a domestic turkey.

You’re likely to get a variety of answer’s to that question. If its cool to cold out, I do like to hang my deer for a few days maybe up to a week if that’s how it works out. But I’ve processed them the same day and I can’t honestly say it makes much of a difference. If its’ warm outside, it definately does make some difference in taste as to how fast you get it cooled down. Biggest issue in my opinion is cleanliness. Keep it clean from start to finish and you’ll get good meat.
in reply to: Custom skinner #11494If you really want a custom knife I’d look locally first. Hopefully you can find someone that you can actually see his stuff before you order it. I live in a small town and have 5 or 6 within a fifteen minute drive. I like to shop locally if at all possible.
Interesting thread to me as “my” knife maker actually passed away a few weeks ago. A WW2 pilot who made knives with one hand and a hook on the other; and with glaucoma so bad you couldn’t see his eyes through his glasses. Still made a beautiful, inexpensive, practical knife. Last knife I bought from him for my daughter’s birthday, he said it warrantied for life….his not mine. You just don’t get that at Wal-mart.
in reply to: Meat in the Freezer #11461Thanks for the replies everyone. Glad to know I don’t stand alone on this issue. Bruce, you make a good point about bringing your family and kids into the fun. I probably enjoy this as much as I do because I grew up learning how to do this with my family. When I was young, every year we would have a butchering day where the whole family got together to package a couple of elk my dad, uncles and grandpa got. So, while those experiences didn’t seem like much at the time, they did stick with me over the years.
in reply to: The anser to all our problems! #27547That’s funny. At least this scent killer has some science behind it. I work with ozone as part of my job and the it amazes me what people try to peddle. Ozone does indeed destroy organic molecules, including molecules associated with human odor. But the idea that you can destroy enough scent in an open space with an ozone generator thats marketed as “impossible to exceed federal regulation levels” (ie. very small amounts of ozone) is ridiculous. In addition ozone has a distinct odor on its own that isn’t very pleasant. Maybe that’s the secret, an unpleasant oxidizer that burns your lungs is whitetail attractant.
