What makes you scared that you won’t like the longbow? I’ve shot both over the years…these days I’m shooting a take down longbow that I made myself from a Bingham plan. It’s a blast shooting something you built yourself

This will probably sound strange to you but I find that I shoot one piece bows better. I have a bunch of takedowns and I like them all but all of my one piece bows feel better to me when I shoot them. The best longbow out there, for me anyway, is the one piece Tomahawk Diamond Series SS…..I liked it so much I bought a take down as well. It felt entirely different to me. It was so different I returned it. I had the same experience with a Horne Traditionalist longbow

John…if you mean a laminated bow then do what Tim said. I just built my second Bingham bow and it came out real nice. It’s a shooter and I’ve already got some ideas for another set of limbs for it. Best of all is that ElMont’s staff can work with you on what to order. I had purchased their plan for a 68″ take down longbow but I wanted it to be 64″ instead. They told me exactly how to modify the design and when I told them the draw weight I wanted they provided the correct laminations. In fact, by following the Bingham design I got the exact weight I asked for.

          Good Luck!!

Hey Eric—- I’ve only used my regular arrows for squirrel along with hex blunts. I’ve no doubt you could use flu-flu arrows if you like but I’d say keep those shots real close. Squirrels are tougher to kill than you might think and those big feathers are going to slow your arrow down quite a bit after 10-15 yards which will retard the penetration.

If you get to liking small game hunting with the bow I’d recommend you look through some past issues of TBM. Jason Wesbrock did a nice piece on inexpensive small game arrows and TJ took an excerpt from Campfire Reflections about grouse hunting (big Blue Grouse) that will give you some ideas as well.

            Good Luck!!
