I enjoy reading a great deal on a variety of subjects and fiction and nonfiction. Recently have begun quite interested in natural history and how us humans feel “pulled” to be outdoors (at least many of us). Been reading a lot of David Peterson and Thoreau and I’ve been inspired. 😀

Actually you’re right. Was testing some heavier weight points this morning (175 grain) and what a difference! Much more consistent groups with this set-up. I’m getting into this heavy arrow concept.

Good evening and welcome all. I hail from northcentral Pennsylvania, just a bit from the NY/PA border. Have really delved into traditional archery in the last year. Shooting a longbow, after having spend some years with a recurve.

Not slapping constantly but enough to start hurting after awhile. 🙂 I like to cant the bow when I shoot, a tip I picked up from reading G.Fred Asbell. I just don’t feel comfortable shooting standing with the bow straight up and down. Having said that, do you think it’s the canting that’s causing the string slap?

You guys that are shooting the arrows of 600 grains and more, are you using wood, carbon or aluminum? Alex, I see that you referenced carbon arrows. How do get them that heavy, i.e. 600 grains and over?

Thanks for the comments Dave. Yes, the Field Bow is absolutely the most bow for the money that I know of. Going to spend all spring shooting it and them maybe order the Lil’ Creep over the summer. Sorry to hear about the snow out there. 🙁

I’m happy to report problem solved! Just got off the phone with Jerry at Great Northern. The small crack in the riser was a flaw that he noticed while building the bow. It’s all sealed up and only a visual flaw now. Being the nice guy he is, Jerry offered to make me a new bow if cosmetically it bothered me. Told him no–I’m enjoying the bow too much. Already spoke with him about ordering one of his Lil’ Creep bows later this year. A class act and I’ve become an (unoffical of course) spokesman for Great Northern! 😀

I’ve been using a Jo-Jan aluminum, single-arrow model for about 8 years now. Someday I might pick up the six-arrow model. For now though, it works good and like Dave said I’m not usually in much of a hurry when fletching.

Funny….I noticed while re-reading my original post I meant to say 2117’s, not 2217’s. Do they make such an animal?

I will be sure to let everyone know how it shoots and I’ll try and post some pictures as well. I’ve previously bought only factory-made bows prior to this but the little, personal touches you get when dealing with a custom shop make such a difference. While the Field Bows from Great Northern are not custom-made per se, that is you can’t specify options like locator grips, wood choices, etc., everything I’ve heard are that they are great longbows! Jerry even told me he would string my new bow and let it sit a day or two before shipping, to help set any string-stretch.

Your absolutely right Dave. The Field Bows are usually made no more than 45#. Once in awhile one will come through in maybe 47-48# draw weights. Jerry said he was surprised the 44-pounder that I bought had stayed around as long as it did, as the heavier pound ones usually go quick. Now, I’m looking at one the Great Northern leather side quivers. 😀

Good one Dave! By the way, I have several of your books and enjoy your writing very much. I’m a aspiring writer myself, but haven’t been published yet. My first “published” work will be a blog article. I’m currently working on a short article for TBM regarding that need so many of us have to get outdoors. In particular, your books Heartsblood and A Man Made of Elk have really interested me in natural history.
