I am also 6’1 with a 29″ draw. I shot a horne mnt td at 55lbs. I got my first longbow off ebay for $300, yes it is also a horne. I would start with a weight you can pull comfortably, which would mean shooting a few bows at different weights to see where you are at. SO I would first recommend shooting everything you can get your hands on before you go buy a bw and regret not shooting first. I think they are the ones you can do a trial lease/ rental on before you buy.

I have a big problem with this photo. Not of the deer, not of the lion, but of the blankity blank blank feeder in the back ground. I DO NOT respect anyone who hunts feeders. As far as Im concerned if you cant find the deer by scouting or just getting out in the woods your self, you have no business out there. But thats just me.

Very interesting story. Amazing what doing it right with your arrow weight can do huh!

Great post Todd. I have read that book also. very helpful. I was watching a blue grouse last Saturday when a nice cow elk came walking by. never got a good shot opportunity but had a great time. its amazing what you can see when you “still” hunt.

I shoot Gold Tips 5575’s They shoot great for me. Love that you can add weight to front with the brass inserts.

I think there are a bunch of good replies. I think its for fate to decide. Some times things happen for a reason and that’s that. You can do what you will to get him to take interest in the stick n string but until he decides to, it wont happen. God works in mysterious ways sometimes. He changed me… but only because I opened my mind to the change.

Since I only carry 5 arrow with me when I hunt I take the sixth broad head and make it a practice head. Dont worry about sharping it just shoot it. Takes a little time to change heads when you change arrows but keeps you hunting heads in good shape and you know what each arrow will do.

I scratched up my new recurve yesterday. I had pushed a lil to hard and gone a lil to far. Almost 10 miles I guess with climbing 3000 ft in elevation. Got to fatigued with all the steep drops and climbs ended up falling down a 30ft embankment less that a half mile from the trail head. Think Ill keep these scratches to remind myself to be more careful and plan my hunt a lil better. It was a kinda seat of my pants hunt just wondering around. Had a blast though got some good pictures.

Teaching kids is really a blast. I have been working with my six year old and he has really taken to it and done quite well,(he won his first 3d shoot). He had the same problem with the arrow coming off the shelf. We figured out that he was able to avoid it by canting the bow more. That really worked well for him. I have noticed it can also be how he draws back the string, seems if you can get a smooth straight draw and not pull back at angles that helps also. You might try that with the kids you are teaching see how it goes.

                            Good luck.

Nice Clay! I found 8 cows bedded down Thursday morning. Took me an hour to get with in 20 yards. They never saw me. She stood up and walked away never gave me a shoot. A few minutes later a muzzle loader took a shoot at her and missed. She had a lucky day!
