in reply to: Found a Big Buck… (pics included) #42009
Great find! My uncle found a skull and antlers once, but we figured it was probably a buck that was wounded during hunting season the year or two before….There are a lot of trigger-happy fools out there that can’t shoot to save their souls.

in reply to: Recurve or longbow your choice and why? #37749I currently have two Bear recurves. The first, a newer Grizzly, 55@28, and the older, a 70-some Kodiak Mag, 55x#@28. I shoot both pretty well, but the Mag a little better, I think. I’d like to get a takedown longbow at some point, but one that I can put longbow or recurve limbs on. I know…it’s a big order to fill…lol.

in reply to: Going to Hunt Elk need some advice #33831I’ll beat the dead horse…you’re underbowed at 41#. I’m sure that the Indians of old didn’t care if they had 30 pounds or 130 pounds, as long as the animal died. But in this day and age, where ethics is so high on the priority list, you really have to take into consideration what is and is not ethical. I’ve talked to guys that shot elk with large caliber (300 win mag and up) rifles, and watched an elk soak up anywhere from 3 to 6 or 8 bullets. A friend several years ago shot a raghorn bull 3 times with a .338 win mag under 100 yards, 2 of them in the vitals, and it still wanted to keep going. They’re tough animals.

in reply to: I broke my Bow, now what! #33821That totally sucks!! Sorry for your misfortune. Hope you can come up with another bow soon. Good luck.
Michael.
in reply to: How do you sight with your bow #33197I typically use the same technique that Steve described. Hold my arm out basically in line with my target, draw straight back, touch the corner of my mouth and cut’er loose. It’s all done with determination and a steady pull-through. My uncle swing-draws….starts with his bow arm down, and as he brings the bow up, he also draws to anchor, and as he hits his anchor, releases…it works well for him. He’s one of the more accurate recurve shooters I know around here.

in reply to: missing hair on my forearms??? #32537I do. I have about a 3″ wide piece of belt leather about 3 feet long that I use.

in reply to: Does any one use true traditional Equipment #31589Todd,
Where in Montana are you travelling to to hunt?
Michael.
in reply to: missing hair on my forearms??? #31587I know what you mean, Steve, about butterfingers…lol…No matter what I’m doing, if I have a sharp object (knife, broadhead, screwdriver, pointed stick…), I will, and I mean I WILL draw blood. I too can tell if they’re sharp enough by looking at them, but there’s just something satisfying about checking to see if they’re sharp enough to shave with. I have yet to try shaving my face, though. Just not that brave…YET…or maybe it’s stupid??

in reply to: Arrows Lost Per Year #30663I don’t keep track. When I get low or run out, I go buy more, IF my accountant lets me. LOL!! If I shoot a few times a week, probably 1 or 2 every 3rd or 4th trip to the range or target course/3d shoot. Oh, and then probably between 3 and 6 during archery season. The squirrels have a pretty good collection of my judo arrows…LOL!

in reply to: missing hair on my forearms??? #30657Yep!! Knives, broadheads…kitchen knives…lol…anything that’ll take an edge!
in reply to: Other woods #28263Holten,
Thanks for the information. We do have both yew and juniper here. The problem with most junipers is that they have limb-split after limb-split, going up the trunk, and it seems like there’s never any decent “trunk” to get a blank out of to start with. I do have a piece of juniper that was a small diameter tree (probably 2-2 1/2″ at the butt) that’s about 6 1/2 or 7 feet long, perhaps a bit more, that I kept from a job site we were working on. Most of the yew that grows around here is just a big bush, basically, about the same diameter as the piece of juniper I have, but yew tends to have more curve to it, so I don’t know how well that would work. I may have to look into finding a copy of the Bowyers Bible, and go from there. Thanks for the information, though, as it will get me thinking a bit…lol….of course, that could be dangerous, too.

in reply to: Moose scouting pics… #26064Everybody views Montana as a stronghold, but this initiative just goes to show that we are indeed just as susceptible to the anti-hunters as anybody else…I’m going to try and join both of our trapping organizations (hopefully) here in the state. Hoping to do some trapping this winter, but I don’t know yet. All depends on money….but wait, doesn’t everything? LOL.

in reply to: Bear blade and weapons discussion… #26056That does look like a good book. Now if I just had the money to buy it. LOL!!
in reply to: Surprise Tree stand dangers! #26047I really like the Spectracide brand that Home Depot carries. Better than raid, and I think it has like a 25 or 30 foot spray range….at least until you get to the end of the can…lol…
Michael.
Steve, I think they liked that something warm stopped by to help them begin an early warm-up session. LOL.
