in reply to: Hunting Binoculars #8010
I’ve got a pair of Simmons I got at Wal-mart about 3 or 4 years ago, for 25 bucks. They aren’t the greatest, but they seem to do pretty good in low light for such cheap optics. But, I would eventually like to get something a bit nicer, perhaps, say, in the 3-500 dollar range. IF the wife ever lets me. Oh, the Simmons are a 10×50 binoc.

in reply to: Avatar (The Movie) and Longbows #8003I took my 7 year old to the movie under the impression from my mother-in-law that it was an OK kid movie. In my opinion, it is NOT a kids movie, due to the violence and language usage, but it was a very well-written movie, none-the-less. It didn’t bother my 7 year old, because at his mother’s, as I’ve found over time, they watch a lot of movies that are NOT kid-friendly (i.e. Predator, Predator vs. Alien, etc.), yet they have no qualms with allowing him to watch. So, as such, a PG-13 rating is nothing for him. The graphics and surreal attention to detail in the movie was astounding. It is definitely one that I would watch again. Just my thoughts.

in reply to: This one really takes the cake! #61760Hey Patrick…Will you be using a knife with a knapped blade? hammered blade? or just get a chunk of obsidian and wrap a piece of rawhide around part of it so you don’t cut the shizang outta your hand? lol. How about just affixing a big round rock to the end of a stick and using that as a club…go complete caveman. Just a couple more options.:lol:

in reply to: Public, Private or both? #24754Mostly public land (National Forest and State-owned or School Trust lands), as well as some public-accessible Plum Creek Timber Company lands. I do have some “somewhat exclusive” access to a few small parcels of private property, but the deer apparently weren’t there this year. Some people are blaming wolves, others are blaming too many does killed the last few years by hunters, and still others are blaming a couple of “hard” winters. Drop in elevation by about 500-700 feet, and the deer were everywhere. Did they move out due to predation? I don’t know. If that’s the case, eventually the predators will follow, and that means into peoples’ yards.
in reply to: Anyone else hate gun season? #24750As a general rule, I carry my recurve during our archery season, and during our rifle season, I carry my 7mm Rem. Mag. I haven’t as of yet carried my recurve in the woods during rifle season, as I’m far more focused on filling my freezer during rifle season. Archery season for me is a time to get out, enjoy the woods and nature, and relax. Rifle season becomes my “grocery shopping” more or less. My wife doesn’t understand my philosophy of “taking my bow for a walk”. With my bow, I don’t care if I shoot something or not. I’ll sling arrows at stumps, logs, squirrels, bushes, grouse, or whatever other handy targets I happen to run across. Most bowhunters (at least compounders) seem to be too serious about killing something to have much fun. Or maybe it’s because the arrows they’re shooting are costing them 75 to 100 bucks a dozen and they don’t want to lose or break any?? It doesn’t bother me to go out and break a few arrows while stumping (or rocking, if that turns out to be my “target”). I can buy more down the road. Heck, even out hunting with my rifle, if I have the extra shells to burn, I’ll do a little target practicing if I haven’t seen a deer or other game animal to shoot at. Sure, I’m more serious about filling tags when I have my rifle. That’s because I have a family to feed, and beef is expensive. But if I pull the trigger on a branch on a downed log and a deer runs off out of the bushes next to me, WHO cares???? I mean, honestly…I’m out in the woods to enjoy myself. If I’m not having fun, then why am I out there at all?

in reply to: hunting hawaii #14518My dad lives over on the island of Maui. I have yet to go visit him, but if I do ever make it over there, I intend to go hunting, myself. He’s a diver, but I’m not big on swimming where there are fish that might eat me. I like dry land better than the thought of being bested by a cutthroat trout’s over-sized, over-toothed cousin.

in reply to: Gun Season with a Bow? #62670I hunt our archery season because it gets me outdoors and give me an opportunity to appreciate nature in a quiet state. I also hunt our rifle season with my rifle. I tend to hunt faster and cover more ground during rifle season. Perhaps this is because even if I spook something and it stops well beyond bow range, I can still harvest it? I don’t know for sure. I don’t think I have the confidence in my hunting ability to fill my freezer with just my bow at this point in time. I have the confidence in my shooting ability, just not my hunting ability. I get lucky from time to time, but I’m too impatient of a hunter to sit still long enough or move slow enough through the woods. Add into that the fact that I grew up with a rifle in my hand, and it’s hard for me to let go of something familiar and constant.

One of my aluminum packs has a fold-down shelf that I like for hauling loads (I used to use it for packing a trapping bucket in high school), but it is so ungodly uncomfortable. My dad gave me one of his frame packs, but it doesn’t have a shelf, but it’s a lot more comfy to wear. I may try to modify a fold-down shelf for that frame. It has a lot more friendly hip belt, and the top of the pack doesn’t go way up by the top of my head. My aluminum with the shelf reaches way up high, and sucks in any kind of brush.
Dave, what kind of day pack do you prefer? Any specific brand/size?
Michael
Dave, what kind of frame do you have? Is it aluminum? or? How heavy does that pack weigh? Looks like a fair bit. I need to figure out my pack for next year. I have a couple different aluminum frame packs already, just need to decide how/if I want to modify them.

in reply to: ignoring facts #53056For me, I’ll do some of my own experimenting with arrow set-ups and broadheads. I don’t know what I’ll eventually and finally settle on. I just know that I will settle on something that I believe to be the best that I can affordably and accurately shoot. For those of you that wish to delve deep into Dr. Ashby’s methodologies, by all means, do so. For those of you that don’t, then by all means. Good hunting.

in reply to: When and why do you replace your glove? #48470As for the WHEN part…WHEN I lose my glove, I replace it. Notice I said WHEN not IF. IF does not seem to come into play for me, in typical everyday life.
As for the WHY part…Why I replace my glove is because I lost it.
I’ve lost two really nice gloves in the last year, and that really, really sucks. The first was about a 45 dollar glove with the shooting surface constructed of cape buffalo hide. Tough material, but thin enough that I could feel the string through the leather really well. The second was one that I bought at the first 3-D shoot this year. Which was just after I lost my 45 dollar glove this spring. Now I need to find a new glove to shoot through the winter.
