in reply to: String Makers #23457
There are some good video’s on youtube and the DVD “Doing the Twist 2” is very good.
FastFlight type material is stronger, has less stretch and last longer then B50. Both Brownell and BCY make good material. I prefer Brownell, there customer service was better for me. If you can find it UltraCam is IMO the best material out there with XS2 a close second.
But there are many good ones out there and if you are just starting some D97 is a good material that you can get pretty cheap.
A place called Janns Netcraft is a fishing store but you can get rubber catwhiskers (used for making bass jigs)there for pennies a piece compared to a few dollars at a archery place.
in reply to: Grizzlies tuffheads and tuskers #42303In regards to strength and less likely to get damaged. The Tuffhead wins. then grizz then tusker.
Ease of sharpening tuffhead wins again. The newer grind grizzly makes them not a problem and I would say either them or tuskers would be really close.
The Tuffheads cost more but they are better all around imo. Ive shot the standard 160 grizz with great success thou. In my shooting into hard objects and weird angles to find weak points in broadheads it faired better then the grizzly elgrande and the tusker concorde. If you go with either of them I recommend changing the tips to more of a point especially if you hunt out of a tree. While the tuffhead is ready to go.
in reply to: String Material #8256I make strings for a company and have found on most bows that ultraCam seems to me to be the best material out there. Very high breaking strength, without the creep. 10 strands, Pad to 16 in the loops with B55 and your good to go.
If its a recurve and has carbon back and belly UltraCam seems to be a bit louder for whatever reason and then use D10. use the same strand count with same padding.
in reply to: Clips from Kalamazoo #63444Very informative videos. The tribes arrows where a really amazing.
in reply to: A long look at fletching and EFOC #59048Made some 2.5″ long by.75″ high. They whistle very badly I’m guessing because of the height and angle. Cut them down to 5/8″ and quiet.
in reply to: d97 string stretch and other stuff #58311D97 wil always have some creep in a flemish string. It will slow down a lot thou and you may only have to give it a twist or two every 1000 shoots. How many strands was it?

in reply to: Adding to a bow curious of problems #50125If the rest of the bow is in good shape and you don’t want to refinish it just tape it off. Tape the area around where you plan on putting on a finish. If you want to do the whole bow, use 120 then 220 grit sandpaper on the whole thing. It will take awhile to get the old finish off. I use120 grit on the area I’m going to glue a overlay on as a prep for the glue. Then wipe do with a good cleaner.
in reply to: Adding to a bow curious of problems #50104I use 5 coats of tru oil and then a clear spray urethene. Use the same process on a new bow when I build one.
Its up to you on strand count, but 10 strands of some of the new material like UltraCam are stronger then 18 of dacron.
in reply to: Adding to a bow curious of problems #49146Did the same thing on a late 90’s bear td hunter. It had large all wood tip overlays. I filed them down to about 1/16″ all the way along the tip. I then took a piece of 1/8″ black phonlic shaped it close to what the tip was before I glued it on. For the glue up I used super glue which works just fine. Once it is glued down you can then sand it down to make a smooth overlay.
Make sure you make the bottom of the phonlic as thin as possible before you glue on, this will give you a nice clean transition. I have shoot 10 strands of D97 off it for the last few years with no problems. Plus the bow feels so much better compared to the larger B50 strings.
in reply to: Feather???? What Feathers!!!! #43501Question?
With a arrow with that much arc would it act like a slightly untuned arrow because of the tail end so much higher then the broadhead? Or in theory the tail of the arrow still directly behind the broadhead?

in reply to: A long look at fletching and EFOC #38898Just really started messing with the smaller fletching. But am really happy so far. Only at 27.5% foc thou, but getting excellent flight. Having a custom chopper for some 3″x 3/4″ A&A pattern made right now.
in reply to: Which state for whitetail tags? #8035On a archery tag in Missouri you are allowed to kill two deer of either sex but only one buck before rifle season and two turkeys of either sex. And almost all of the state allows you to take as many does as you want to buy a tag for.
A resident gets two and two turkey for $19 and as many anterless tags as you want buy for $7.in reply to: El Grande flight tests #44649Ive got three packs of the new El Grande and thou they are much better, still required some good file work.(Thanks King) Mine all came with a bevel at about 26.5 degree. The last couple when finished ended up at about 185 grains. Just the ones Ive got thou. But no matter what they are still one bad mama jama and fly oh so well.
