in reply to: trad vs. compound #60228
I started shooting a bear whitetail when I was about 13 at 41 I switched to a bear Montana longbow. Of all the bow hunters I know (compound/trad) both thought I was little whacko when I switched, but im happy I did I like it so much I sold my last compound bow. I dont think trad will ever outnumber the compound guys, hunting with a compound is too easy and not many people are willing to do things thats more dificult I think its our society everything we do is supposed to be easy and if it aint easy have someone else do it.
in reply to: shooting longbow #60222Brian, I also shoot a Bear Montana longbow. I have tried three under, split and even tried string walking a little. I went back to split that works best for me; but whichever you end up using just be consistent with the way you hold shoot anchor and release. The bow is great.
in reply to: help with the longbow #59014Brian, I switched from compounds to a recurve about three years ago then progressed to a longbow. I hold my bow by wrapping my thumb and index finger around the grip and placing the tip of my index finger under the tip of my thumb the other three digits point toward the target. By gripping this way I dont put much if any torgue on the bow. It took a lot of trial and error to come to this way of holding but it works for me anyway.
in reply to: Any Stringmakers out there? #58992I have tried making flemish strings took me a couple tries but I finally got it right (length) but after shooting it for a couple months it started slipping and coming unwound. Any suggestions as to what I done wrong.
[What kind of carbon arrows are you using? I tried four different brands before hitting on carbon express. THey work great for me I use the heritage 250’s shooting them from a 55# bear cheyenne longbow. They fly beautiful for me. I tried Grizzly stiks in the same bow they had real bad propoise that I 45# recurve though. I guess what im saying is experiment with different brands before you give up on carbon.
Happy hunting, Pothunter.
For those of you thinking of changing to carbon with the look of wood you may want to look at the carbon express heritage. They look pretty good and I get good flight with them. I recently switched a few of my arrows to 4″ feathers I usually shoot 5″. After changing to the smaller feathers, the arrows seem to fly just as good as they did with the 5″ but they also are noticably faster. would changing to a smaller feather make a speed difference that is acutally noticable with the naked eye.
I have been shooting traditional for about two years now. I have used both aluminum and carbon but I have been debating about switching to wood. Does anyone have any suggestions/remarks about wood. I know they are a little more trouble to upkeep, but I think I want to try them.
