Congrats, those are some nice trophies. I am glad to see others taking pride in small game. Thanks
Yes but not consistlantly swung left. The point is headed on spot but the shaft cocked left. I think I have figured it out. With some tinkering on form. I loosened the grip and tried to use correct form. The arrows hit perfect at 12 yards 7 of 10 shots. I think I was just torqueing the bow a bit and not looking at a spot. Might have been looking at the target as a whole. When I relaxed and really picked a spot I was driving tacks:) I started shooting at 6 feet and now at 12 yards, in another week I will move back to 15 yards and see if I can keep good form. I am shooting CAE 2117 30.5″ with 125 grain tips out of a 62″ 39# at 28″. My draw is 29″.
in reply to: First long bow #43250Frank, it is a recurve that is made by Gary Nease. The only information I could find about this maker was he was 13 in the IBO world in 2004 for trad class 3d. His name pops up on allot of trad score cards out of Virginia. I dont know anything else about it other than it appears to be maple and black glass. Its a very fine crafted bow, just wish I could find the guy that made it.:(
in reply to: First long bow #43203I picked up a laminate maple takedown 39# at 28″ Frank. I love it it light enough I can shoot allot and work on my form without fatigue. Once I learn the basics, tuning and such I will spend the money on a 55# or better. This little bow is awsome in the woods after rabbits and stumps.:P
in reply to: First long bow #39777I picked up a Buck Creek recurve by Gary Nease. it is a laminate takedown. 39# at 28 inches. I took it to the woods today stump and sparrow shooting. I am forever hooked on the stick and string now. It was a delight to see how the cant of the bow and how the hand was released effected the arrow. I was shooting tradtional carbon 5575 flu-flu with 100 gn judo’s. I was just as happy shooting at bluegrass stems from 15 yards as I am shooting anything with my compound. I think I am gonna be an addict 🙁
I understand the variables, I went to the shop today and drew the bow and anchored with a blank shaft. the finished arrow length was 31.5″ that was with at 30″ anchored full draw. I picked up some 1916 eastons 4 inch straight feather and 100 gn feild tips. the fletch end of the arrow hits the target low and right so I assume the weight is to light. Without the tips, the shafts finished were 340 gn. I will experiment. I am figureing out shooting form has more impact on the flight than I expected. It is hard to get out of the upright compound style that I have shot for the last 20 years. Thanks for the comments.

I am very new to traditional shooting. the bow is 39 at 28″ I shoot a 31″ arrow. would that mean I need roughly a 300 grain shaft with a 100 grain field point? I also cant seem to find an anchor point, if I just cant the bow steeply and draw and shoot quickly it seems I can hit the mark 20 yards and under.
This has ben a very quite forum for a newbie.

I like 50lb Longbows I draw almost 30in kinda a good overall weight for me, there are also other factors to consider on Longbows such as straight limbed D style types or the Reflex/Deflex Style Longbows! My advice would be to find Trad event or a bow shop and shoot a few of them if that is possible and then make your decision!
Did you find the longbow easier than the recurve? Are you familiar with the Bear Montana?
