If you can look at the whole rock it looks like it has eggshell lines, broken on the end, one can make out what looks like perhaps a leg bone and possibly hip socket. I’m going to try to get it to someone at West Texas State U one of these days. Maybe they’ll not tell me it’s just another “you know what’n rock”.:D
I know I’m way late on this but the first thing I thought of is a fossilized leaf – look up Ginkgo Biloba and check out the similar patterns. This was a tree that was long thought extinct but has been around for literally ages. Good luck on figuring it out – cool find.

in reply to: Death Knell for a Bear Kodiak? #52401I shoot two old Bear re-curves. When I first got into bow hunting about 12 years ago someone sold me a pressure quiver that caused my bow to get some horizontal marks like those in your picture (not vertical lines). I didn’t know anything but I figured that was bad, so I stopped using the quiver.
I have shot the bow many times since then and taken quite a few deer with it. I switched to a compound (I never gave up shooting fingers for what it’s worth) and now my goal this year is to go back to traditional only.
So, I guess my short answer is I don’t know, but my horizontal cracks/stress marks in the finish haven’t given me grief.
Good luck.
in reply to: Start them young #52382Great post. I had similar experiences this winter with my daughter, who just turned 4 this April. She was racing across the snow (I had to go slower as I kept breaking through) identifying droppings and tracks.
So during one of these adventures, we were at my parents’ place in Wisconsin, and there is one spot on his property that tends to hold lots of rabbits (it happens to be right under his propane tank). So we walk by, and there was a large pile of rabbit droppings. She just looked at me in absolute awe and said “Wow Dad, I’ve never SEEN this much rabbit sign.” I laughed (in all your days, huh) but I was really about the proudest guy in the county that day.
Thanks for sharing and here’s to starting them young!
