in reply to: Coues Deer Hunting? #24046
Baiting is legal in half of our state for whitetails. I didn’t want it to happen, but it did. I don’t hunt on my lease where I know bait has been put out, but I honestly don’t think it helps anybody kill any deer HERE. I don’t know about that area. I’m sure the habitat is far inferior to Georgia and maybe makes them much more susceptible to being killed over it, but in this state, it has done nothing but save deer.
I know a lot of people who started baiting as soon as it became legal. None of them do it anymore because it just doesn’t work in a quality habitat situation. I’m almost glad it’s legal now. More deer for those of us willing to work for em!
I do have one question though: Are these water holes natural springs or stock ponds, watering tanks, etc?
I don’t really have an opinion either way. Just trying to get a grasp on where you all stand.
in reply to: Few Trail Cam Pictures #24029Great shots Tommy.
That turkey picture is my favorite too. If I didn’t have this lion hunt coming up, I’d be reading Tom Kelly already.
Hope you come on that wma hunt with me. It should be a slam dunk if we get the weather.
I’d love to get 2 of my 3 gobblers down there so I can chase mountain birds or maybe recurve one.
Heck, I’d like to limit out so I can just go with other people!
in reply to: Had to take a second look #24023Must’ve been a pile of termites in those two trees!

Nah….you’re in great shape, pal. I can’t wait to hear about it…..I know you’ll have a fantastic time. And I can’t wait for my painter meat.:D
I know Feather.:D On the Blackbeard hunt, he was very tired and worn out by the end of the hunt. Uncle Bun Bun and I stayed up the last evening, fresh and full of life, hanging out with the other hunters. Etter was already curled up in his bag asleep by 2100… I’m 5yrs older than Etter and don’t work out as much as he does and Bun Bun is 51yrs old..
I really hope those Idaho hills don’t run Etter into the dirt on the first day of the hunt…. I’m worried about him..
:D:D:D
You’re in fantastic shape Etter, and I really hope you get that “grueling” track you’re fantasizing about buddy!!!
Looking forward to all the pics when you get back!!!
I’m sure you’ll have to carry Tom out over your shoulders when it’s all said and done with! 😀
I think a gallon of wine might have had something to do with that Lackey:D
I was also really worn out from dragging and skinning deer.
I’m sure the 100yd drag out to the trail really stressed you on the island hunt. 45lbs is quite a bit for a 220lb guy to drag for so long.
Skinning such a mammoth animal has to be very exhausting…
I honestly don’t know how you did it??
😀
I only weighed 216, and now I weigh 211.
How many deer did you kill?:D
in reply to: Antler Hunting #23956The food plots at Tom’s and all the wheat fields around the club will surely have some soon.
in reply to: And It Starts Again #23894Congrats on a great season!
I actually love this time of year. I love chasing woodcock, coyotes, ducks, squirrels, rabbits, and just having the woods to myself again. There’s also some great winter trout and striper fishing around here.
Our season is 4 months long so it becomes a little draining when it’s finally over.
They’re calling for snow tomorrow so I might be tracking pigs in the mountains and before you know it, it’ll be turkey season!!!!!
Can’t wait. Have a great winter everyone. Probably my favorite time to be in the woods.
in reply to: Minimum poundage to harvest whitetail #23711I think you’ll be just fine if the arrow goes where it’s supposed to. I gained a lot of confidence in trad bows this year.
My lighter bow is probably 47lbs at my draw length. I shoot a full length 35/55 arrow with 190 grain broadheads (2 inch wide at that).
I killed a 125lb pig and a 100lb buck with that setup this year. The arrow blew through both and buried deep in the dirt on the other side. In fact, I shot the buck twice because he pretty much just stood there after the first went through.
When switching from a compound to a much slower trad bow, it’s easy to wonder how it will perform, but if you do your part, it surely will do the job.
In fact, I’ve had much shorter and easier to track blood trails now that I’ve gone trad than when I ever shot a compound.
Good luck and welcome to it!

in reply to: Antler Hunting #23699You and me are just alike tommy.
I killed a turkey back on “the point” and when I ran up to pounce on him, I almost tripped over a big five point shed.
The next week I was “guiding” a cute blonde from the forestry school in the same area. I took a break from hunting for a minute to chase morels and I walked right up on the other matching side.
It was 400 yards away. Still my best matching sheds. As far back in as that place was, that old buck surely died of old age.
in reply to: Antler Hunting #23643It totally depends on the genetics of the deer in your area. It seems to me that deer in the northern regions, who have a short and specific rut, drop their antlers earlier than those down here.
I often would see deer in PA’s late flintlock season without antlers as early as christmas.
Down here in Ga, I have seen mature bucks chasing does on opening day of turkey season (Late March) with bone still.
I typically start finding them in February but always stumble on the most of them during turkey season (March thru May)
The numbers of rodents in your area will determine how much is left when you find em.
Good Luck!

I outweigh you by 55 lbs shrimp!!:D
You might be surprised now Joey. Got my mile run at 5:44 this week. Cutting back on carbs now trying to drop to 205 or so. Ill be ready for those “hills”.:D

Ha ha! I’ve been going to the gym for years now, but I really turned it up the last six months.
I see some of these lion hunts on tv that look like cake. I hope mine isn’t like that. I want a grueling, long track!
The dogs are going to hit the track and have that cat treed 200yds away.
😀
If that’s the case, I’ll tree him myself!
in reply to: 23 Days Left!! #22402Smithhammer wrote: Sounds like you’re going in from the west side. I think you’ll have your work cut out for you! If you get your cat early, there are some cool hot springs in the area as well.
We’ll be in units 33, 35, and 39.
