in reply to: Late season hunting! #24653
The way I grew up in PA, we always hunted the late season. Usually started around Christmas and lasted 3 weeks or so. We mostly did deer drives with bows and flintlocks. I killed my first deer in January when it was -17. Awesome times!
in reply to: Grizzly hunt! #9004Bears of both species and lions are the most magnificent creatures in north america. I have hunted blacks and lions. Pursuing grizzlies would be dream come true for me.
Black bears are my favorite creature in my neck of the woods. Killing them is always an emotionally challenging experience. Having said that, I’ve never held fire or backed off draw on one.
in reply to: You make your own bad luck #62529Turkeys are the biggest jerks ever. Drove into my hunting lease the other day and four gobblers sat there looking at my running truck for 2-3 minutes before they slowly walked off. Couldn’t buy one at a grocery store for most of the season.:D
in reply to: How does your Garden Grow? #59976I really wish I had some more sunlight here at the house. Looks great guys.
in reply to: Solo River Trip #59975That looks terrible. You should have stayed home and watched tv instead.
JK. Only wish I could’ve been with ya Joey. Love the looks of that bass too. One of the few species of black bass I’ve never laid eyes on.
Beautiful river too. As Georgians, we sure are spoiled with a variety of habitat types and wildlife.

Know what you mean about the sow’s behavior. I learned that a sow was nothing to mess with when she has cubs. I’ve hunted twice in Quebec years ago and was told not to get between a mother and her kids.
We ate bear on the grill there and I found it very tasty!

Bear backstrap is probably the best wild game around!
in reply to: Into The Wild #54712Great movie and great music, but if you read the book, you’d see that he was wildly unstable. He had a lot of issues. I honestly wish I had the wild, wandering spirit that he did, but there was more going on there than meets the eye in the flick.
in reply to: Turkey Hunting to Bear Scouting #52431I wish GA would allow a limited draw for bait hunt. We truly do have too many bears up in the mountains.
I absolutely love scouting the white oaks and finding the climbing sign. The exhiliration of stalking one up in a tree is not to be forgotten, but I would do it both ways if I could.
in reply to: Close encounters and backup #52422Bears are strange creatures for me to think about. I guess I’ve known them my whole life. I killed my first bear several years before my first deer. Whenever I go bear hunting, I get a few butterflies during the preparation. Up here, that means while walking the 3-5 miles to my spot in the dark. It’s the idea of them that gets me anxious, but when I actually encounter one, I’m never worried.
Last year, I was sitting in a logging road, waiting for daylight when a bear “barked” about 30 yards away. Then for the next ten minutes, he, or she, sat there growling at me. I remember nocking an arrow, backing into the far side of the trail and smiling the whole time. It was pretty cool to me.
Another time, sitting over a bait in Canada, I had my biggest bear ever stand up against the tree I was in and sniff at my boots through the stand.
Black bears are nothing to fear, except in the rarest of situations.
I only have limited experience with lions, but I’m not too worried about them either. Grizz might be a different story. Grizz might get my hackles up.
in reply to: My first "harvest"… #51323That is some unreal eating you found there. Good job.
in reply to: My Elkheart has arrived!! #50074Just beautiful!
I never thought I would be much into bow collecting but I’m up to three now and only three years into this stuff.
in reply to: New bow for elk trip #50068Unreal!
in reply to: Turkey Hunting to Bear Scouting #50044I agree with DWC. It’s different if you are actually putting the food source out. That doesn’t mean that it’s any more challenging or successful. In many areas, including basically all of Canada, baiting bears or hounding them is truly the only way to hunt them.
Keep in mind. I’ve hunted them over bait 15 times and I’ve killed four bears.
