in reply to: 25 Degree angle of cut? #48998
Sorry about the typo….yes the 225s
in reply to: 25 Degree angle of cut? #48443Hey guys!
I have had the same problem myself with Tuffhead 225s and the KME. There is no way to get a 25 angle without grinding the ferrule so I just moved it up to 30 degrees. I also use the 200 grain grizzly BHs and no problem getting them at 25 degrees with the KME but the blade is wider. I would be interested in seeing if there is any measurable
difference b/w a 30 and 25 degree angle since it doesn’t seem like much.
I do find the grizzly BHs a little easier to get crazy sharp though. Going hog hunting in the morning so maybe I’ll get a chance to test both:D
in reply to: light arrow Extreme FOC #9601I’m shooting a black widow lb so it is not center shot but also not allot of deflection like some. Not sure what your draw length is but you could cut them back a bit and drop 20-30 grains. I have shot variations of this weight arrow for a few years now and you will get use to the trajectory quickly. Like was said above at 20 yards and in it is a non factor. I will shoot if needed out to 25 with this set up but i think of this rig as up close and personal. Ya need a little “arch” in archery anyhow;).hope this helps!
in reply to: light arrow Extreme FOC #9448toehead,
I posted the other thread but I am shooting a 29″ AD trad arrow with a brass insert, steel adapter and 225 gr tuffhead bh. Total upfront is 425. My total arrow weight is 775-780. I am shooting a 55 lb longbow but these would probably shoot out of a lighter bow as well. My issue in the earlier thread is that this is getting way up there in normal weigh ranges but as the Doc gave it his blessing and that’s good enough for me:)
in reply to: Heavy FOC arrow question #9025Thanks Doc! I’m gonna run through this current batch and might go the light shaft GPI and heavier head for the next batch. Anyway thanks all for the responses!
in reply to: Heavy FOC arrow question #8044Thanks Smithhammer and agreed. Now is not the time to be messing around with my set up anyhow. Now I can concentrate on practicing and fishing until hunting season opens:D
Take care all!
in reply to: Heavy FOC arrow question #7935Dave— thanks as always for the input. I shot some more last night and I think I am going to just stick with what I have. Out to 20-25 yards it doesn’t seem to matter much that I can tell anyway. I think I might drop the cap wraps on the rear of the arrow and maybe go down in feather size a bit. Dropping the wrap should knock off a bit of weight and help with FOC anyway. The wild card I have where I hunt is the chance at a big hog and/or big bear. So if it was just deer I would probably have a slightly different set up but I like this set up for bear/hog. Thanks so much and good luck this upcoming season…..you are getting close in CO! Ours starts Sept. 8th.
in reply to: CO Elk Help Needed #51873Thanks Dave for the tips….I was hoping you would chime in here:)! We actually discussed coming out a little later but I am not crazy about being out there during muzzleloader season but then again not sure if that would be crowded or not since I have never been. I have read the old posts about calling and such and agree that keeping quiet sounds like the way to go. I do like the idea of going the first week and hopefully hunting animals that have not been pressured. As far as ATVs go I am trying to pick a place where they are banned outright like the Flat Tops area. I don’t mind having seeing someone every once in awhile if they are in deep like me but having someone ride up on me in an ATV doesn’t fly. I have had it happen here in GA too on the national forest so seems like it happens everywhere. Do you have any input on Unit 24 or the White River area? Also when you are hunting early in the season what are some tips/techniques you would recommend?
Thanks in advance for any input.
in reply to: Shot Placement Question #37817Kingwouldbee,
Funny thing I think the guy you referenced lives in every state:D.
As far as variables in hunting are concerned I am very aware that once an arrow is released all bets are off. Animals move, arrow deflection, bone deflection, etc have all happened to me before. This is why I have gone to great lengths to make sure my arrows are “Ashby approved”. I agree that sometimes despite best efforts things just don’t work out. Anyway I have always appreciated the honesty of this forum.
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
in reply to: Shot Placement Question #34478Dave….thank you for the reply. It was one of those situations that happened so fast that I really just reacted. I did hit pretty much where I was looking but now wish I would have crowded the shoulder a bit more and tried to aimed lower. The buck came in fast and wasn’t still for long so it is totally possible that he could have moved a bit as well at the shot. The buck didn’t seem to duck but now that I think about it he might have turned a bit. The crazy thing is I have shot deer in this very area before and the arrow usually just zips right through without the slightest resistance. That is why at first I was thinking a far side leg hit. Thinking back on it now it does seem like the arrow deflected pretty hard on the shot when it hit like it hit a big bone but it was just the ribs. I am thinking now that the buck must have moved at impact and with the angle of the shot on the upper ribs the arrow just changed it’s angle and momentum was lost. This seems to be the most plausible explanation I can find.
My broadheads are leather stropped and nasty sharp….tanto tipped as well. The sharpness of the broadhead is actually why I was probably able to find any blood at all. I actually do allot of hunting on the ground myself and could not agree more about the typically bad angles from a tree. The longer I am at this I am beginning to think that any perceived advantage one gets in a tree stand is quickly lost when it comes to the actual shot. I was actually about to build a ground blind in this spot but opted for the stand instead that evening.
Anyway I appreciate everyone’s input and this forum has been a great resource. Hope to have a story with a happy ending to share with you all next time. Good luck everyone!
in reply to: Shot Placement Question #30699The deer was shot on the left side. I am thinking a 30 degree or less quarter. I didn’t actually think he was quartered hard enough to get the front shoulder but his leg might have been back. I read the thread that Ireland suggested and this is indeed a possibility. The arrow of the deer in those pics was a little higher than my shot and not angling down. I’m thinking though the Doc’s explanation of the arrow skipping is a possibility and thus killing the momentum. I have shot deer before hitting the off side front shoulder and it makes a far louder noise than this did and also seems to do allot of damage. The arrow acted more like now that I think of it like some just halted the momentum…it also was at a shallower angle than I was in up the tree leading me to believe I got a skip. I’m thinking it somehow now hit a high rib at an awkward angle and changed the trajectory of the arrow. This arrow set up I have is normally pretty devastating on anything it hits so this is why I am so surprised and confused on this outcome. I guess I need to get better at making myself aim at the lower 1/3 when from a treestand and hopefully avoiding these high hits altogether if possible.
Thanks so much for the input guys and good luck to all the rest of the season.
in reply to: Shot Placement Question #30048Thanks Guys for the tips. Ireland I will check out the old thread you suggested.
in reply to: Grizzly BH and Bow Quiver #35910Thanks guys for the tips and I will probably just put a leather strip along the bottom.
in reply to: Grizzly BH and Bow Quiver #33605Pat,
Thanks for the quick response and that might be a possibility. I would like to find a solution that does not involve buying a new one if possible as my outdoor funds are pretty limited at the moment.
in reply to: Zwickey No Mercy #42549Thanks Doc and I appreciate the insight. I have always used the Eskimos until this year with good results. However after reading your reports decided to go the single bevel route. I really like the Grizzly also but didn’t want to change all my left wing feathers out:D so went with the No Mercy. Do you happen to know when they will be coming out with the left bevel for Grizzly? Thanks!
Dave
