Welcome!
in reply to: New member saying hello to all. #50238MGreene wrote: My name is Matthew. I currently reside in NW Ohio. I hunt primarily in the hills of southern Ohio where I grew up. I primarily hunt Whitetails. Some day I would love to hunt elk out west.
I am married with three children. A fourteen year old boy, a twelve year old girl, and an almost three month old baby girl. The two older kids (step children) have expressed an interest in hunting. Hunter safety courses are in the works for them. I feel it’s a shame that they weren’t introduced to hunting before this. Better late than never I say.
I am an aspiring bow hunter (have yet to take an animal). I do currently shoot a compound bow. Despite that, my interest in traditional archery has been growing by leaps and bounds in the last few years. As soon as I get enough money together, I plan on buying a good longbow or recurve. I really like the bows made by Black Widow (PSR V), longbows by Great Northern, and Bear Archery.
I do own an older Bear recurve that was a gift from a friend. It is a Bear Tigercat made in Grayling. Unfortunately it is 38lbs at 28 inches. The minimum in Ohio is 40lbs
Thanks for having this great forum. I look forward to learning from all of you as I move into traditional archery and bow hunting.
Welcome! Be careful the simplicity of the stickbow is addictive!

in reply to: Extremely Hard Season So Far! #43907When it rains it pours! I got a good hit on a nice Bear Saturday, but I wasn’t able to recover it. I spent all of Saturday, Sunday, and most of Monday looking for it with no luck. Not an ounce of blood with a high chest hit! Im sick! Bears don’t leave tracks, without blood its impossible to track those critters–Im Sick!

in reply to: Who is your bowhunting hero and why? #28677I also think word Hero is a little much, but there sure are some influences and people I look up to. So I am going to add to the list above. My father who is a miminalist in every sense of the word. Paul Bruner was one that I learned a lot from. Dave’s Passion for elk, and the dark timber they in habit is infectious! You, all here, have added something! That is the cool thing about the mind set of the of the traditional Bowhunter–we feel as we are a part of something transcendent of ourselves. So in short I, like being part of a diverse tribe, have gained more that I have given; from far to many people to list! knowledge and wisdom that makes me consider them all”heros”
in reply to: Who is your bowhunting hero and why? #24339My Grandfather! He built us the bows that we chased woodpeckers with! Larry Jones is another one who influenced me! When I Grow up I want to be Don Thomas:wink:just kiding, but I would like to be able to write like him someday!

Nate these bulls are all on private ground that I dont have acess to anyway or I would have you heading this way for the weekend.
I hear ya on the turkey tags I wouldnt have bought one either except I was trying to get my son a bird through the mentor program.
Good luck this weekend!!
BillWe will have to get togather and shoot one of these days!

As I am sitting here typing this out there are 2 bulls outside bugleing their dominance back and forth to each other.Even without a tag it is the beautiful music of the mountians that reminds me that wild places should be protected for the wild that lives there.
Good luck to all of you chasing the mighty wapiti this fall…Bill

I did the same thing with Turkeys this year–a turkey tag cost more than a bear tag:roll: Turkeys have almost become vermon here and they want us to pay that price!?! Well I had a plot offered to me last year that was full of birds bugling (I relate everything to ELK) and had to turn it down.I hope to find some elk this weekend.
NateThanks for posting this Dave! I will share it with my wife and kids.
Now on another note
“This is especially timely for me, as we are enjoying wild bugling daily now not only when I’m out hunting, but from the cabin porch each night.” You Lucky Bum..lol:lol:
