IMHO Form and a consistent anchor point(s) are the key to shooting the bow at any distance. Rick Welch is one of the best shots and a good teacher, get a copy of his DVD “Accuracy Factory” discusses many of the key points of shooting. Another good vid is Paul Brunner’s “Instinctive Shooting”. Both stress working on form and consistent anchor point. Learn those and even long shots become easier. Last thing is have someone who is a good shot take a look at your form. Tell them what you are trying to do and have them check you out.

Not too sure what is too old is but Mr. Owen Jeffery still hunts and he is about 86, still make bows just about everyday. He killed a monster “for South Carolina” buck two years ago. So how old is too old?

First thing to do is start today on getting in the best shape of your life. If you plan on DIY and are not in prime shape forget it.

Navigating without landmarks is difficult, as you must measure how far you have traveled. GOOGLE orienteering to look for some ideas. I was taught to count my steps and keep track on a beaded cord, then transfer the distance traveled onto my map.

Basic: use wipe on stain and wipe on poly don’t need a dip tube. Use a screw driver as a tool to straighten the shafts, a fletching jib. Spend it now and buy a Bitz, the best. When you buy the shafts pay to get the nock end tapers ground. The front end is not as critical. Just my two cents. Have fun.

Take some first aid training, carry equipment to stop bleeding and know how to use it. (Super glue and cellopane) get a good TOUGH compass, (sits in the bottom of the pack, how often do you check yours?) carry a leaf bag for a emergency bivy sack, carry a couple of lighters, some vaseline soaked cotton balls. I envy you flint and spark guys BUT when I want fire I want it NOW. Let someone know where you are and when you are expected to be back, and when it is time to call the police. Para cord and 100 mph tape hold together the world, carry both. A good sharp knife. Remember the bigger the knife the smaller your…

Carbon is tough, but I shoot a longbow and like wood. Whispering Winds hex shafts are pretty tough. I keep them straight by using a AAE straightner. I also like alums and the X7s 2114s are a good choice.

USMC I live in Hanahan, 10 miles from Charleston. The heart of the Lowcountry. Shrimp and grits, frogmore stew, Thermacell don’t leave home without it.

Nothing like hunting in the steam bath, skitters, and gnats. Piggies are fun

Two items I really like Halo serving and a Beiter Winder with the speed twister.
