in reply to: Moving from a 2 to a 3 blade? #20225
My experience is simply this; I’ve shot critters for about 40 yrs. now. Nearly all have been taken with either Bear Razorheads or Zwickey Eskimos. HOWEVER, about 5 yrs.ago I bought a quart Mason jar full of MA3s at a garage sale, figure’in to use them on groundhogs, rabbits and such to save my good Eskimos from certain death in the rocks and brushpiles. RESULT, the most accurate, field point like, shooting broadhead I’ve seen to date, including all my buddies set-ups as well. I’ve taken 9 whitetails with them now have had flawless results. I still use my Eskimo’s for elk but east of the big river i’ve gone strickly to the MA3. I’ll take accuracy every time.
in reply to: DO I NEED LESSONS? #20190Sounds like you’ve got’er figured out Rebstud. Just don’t try the, “file in my teeth and a Bud Light in both hands” trick. Bleeding is for Elk, not for us. My best luck in Col. has always been the last 2 weeks of the season. More bugleing and better weather. Dave has the early season ticket with his water holes. You should probably stay away from area 17 and Rabbit Ears Pass because that is my back-up spot, just SW of Rand. On the other hand, if your that close, we could help get each others elk out. Good Luck and Stick a Big’in. Buzzard
in reply to: brace ht 1965 Indian Archery recurve? #20174Tom, I’m with TBM67 on this one also. Most of my recurves are 60″ bows and every one of them is set at 8.5″s brace height. Your shooting style may need something slightly different but I’ll bet’in this’ll be close. Let us know how it turns out. Buzzard
in reply to: arrow tuning #46458Heavier heads? Probably not. Your original post stated, flying nock high. Increasing head weight would affect nock left/right. Nock high/low is still a nock point issue. Could also be a nock that’s to tight on the string i suppose. Compare your wood arrow nock to your aluminum arrow nock. Both for tension and thickness.
in reply to: A QUITE BOW #46442Assuming no quiver, the amount deflex and the amount of recurve can make a difference. Most all your noise is coming from limb vibration and string slap. Poor tillering is also a culprit.
in reply to: Who's going to Compton? #46419I’m planning on going again. Hopefully i won’t have to help hold up the movie screen this year. I still think we should blame the rain on Nathan Anderson. It showed up when he did and it left when he did. HaHa!
in reply to: Happy Birthday, David Petersen! #46409Congrats Ol’ Man; time to crack open a bottle of George Dickel! 😆
in reply to: arrow tuning #44056Without more info this might be tough. Several things to think about. Brace height, probably about 7 1/4 to 7 3/4 in. Nock height, about 1/2 in above level, nocking below the nock. Are you shooting 3 fingers under? That will generally not work if the bow is tillered for split finger release. I had a customer once who showed up with a garage sale special. I found it had had the lower limb cut off and new string nocks filed into it. Had to cut off the upper limb to retiller it. Work your way through this one thing at a time. Keep in touch!
in reply to: Bow quiver or not? #43005Problem solved!!!!!!!!
in reply to: WHATS THE RUSH? #43001Rebstud, i’m +1 with PJ. It’s fun to play with 30yd shots around the yard, but in the field, with live animals, 20yd is my limit. If i’m shooting good around the house at 30yd, then a 10ydr at a groundhog or deer feels like a chip shot. I shot zwickey eskimos for decades and love them, but you’ll not go wrong with Eclipse. You can read more about the single bevel heads at this site on Dr. Eds page. You may or may not need them depending on the game you’ll be hunting. Don’t try to rush your accuracy ideals. With no pins, it’s more diffucult to get consistancy.
in reply to: Woodie Weights #36263WW Update: Well, i’ve put forth the effort of shooting both standard and Woodie Weight added, arrows. First, they shot to the left about 6in, at 20 yds, which didn’t make any sense to me. Could be some kind of whiplash effect coming off the rest. At least they were consistent. Second, Dave P. offered potential shaft breakage issues. So far, that has not been the case as I shoot lodgepole pine shafts that have proven to be very tough to break which is the reason I use them in the first place. I’m sure that Cedars would not enjoy the same success. Third, penetration in my Mckenzie is about another 1.5ins. which really doesn’t prove anything. I would need to find one of Dr. Ed’s leftover carcasses to provide usable info. All in all, I’m happy enough with my currant set-up, 575gr total arrow weight, out of a 64lb longbow that I’ll not use the Weights after all, but would support there use if you feel you need them. Thanks to all. Buzzard
in reply to: Most Admired Predators #36209I’m going to chime in here and cast my lot with the cougar. As a young boy, I was blessed with a book called Yellow Eyes, by Rutherford Montgomery. As a budding young archer, it solidified my notion of silence, stalking, and kill. It affects me to this day and stays on my Top Shelf in the library. I’m now 53 yrs and received the book at the age of 11yrs. My wife also would like to put in her 2 cents worth here and votes for the Red Fox. She saw one go through her chicken yard a couple of years ago and was devastated, and amazed. 5 dead hens in about 30 seconds. She broke out her 20ga. pump gun and the next afternoon, ended that foxes career.
in reply to: Beaver fur silencers for life!!! #23987Congrats GTA, our season here ended Feb 28. And yes, you’ll have silencers for life. I’ve been cutting on a kit pelt i caught in ’01 for myself and friends and still have about half of it left.
in reply to: Stone Points? #22366If your truly interested in hunting with stone points, you really need to know how to knap them yourself. That way you can also resharpen them yourself. Hunting with stone points is really post-graduate traditional hunting and is certainly not for everyone! If you decide to do this, try them on local small game first to get a feel for the very real difference they make.
