Patrick- Just have an order I’m about to send in to 3Rivers. Haven’t got their new catalog yet- do the prices go up!- but it sounds like they need to spend a little time checking Dr. ED Ashby’s reports and findings esp. since they seem to prefer the 3bladed vented Wensel head. Take a look at Dr. Ed’s post “Successful Failure”- think I’m sticking to a strong 2-blade.

        GTA- That would be “ferrule”
SB- You nailed it! Now, that looks svelte with just a bit sexy curve. Be interesting to know how many others are planning ro follow your build along and make their own- I’ve got a couple of Fein blades(German stainless) that are dull- it’s basically a vibrating ulu-shaped blade we use to cut sheetrock with. Have to micrometer and measure it to see if it’s a possible candidate for the “Ultimate Broadhead” or it would be perfect for the notorious “pizza cutter” as pictured at StickBow collector section!

SB- One design down, five to go! Excellent sketch- very similar to the modified 160 gr. Grizzlys I have- they’re all right bevel, as is yours, so should be fletched with right-wing feathers. How about a right and left bevel of three designs or would that be too complicated?
Stickbow.com has an interesting article with photos on broadhead collecting- 1st American commercial head in 1878 by Peck&Snyder and some photos of the Pioneer Gametamer aka the pizza cutter and the infamous flying apple corer- two examples that didn’t quite work out as intended!
About half way down is a photo of an Easton Forged which is similar to the design I envisioned- slight elliptical(not as radical as the Masai or Nanook from ABS)- maybe 1 to 1 1/8 wide by 2 1/2 to 2 5/8 inches long- come on guys, curves are sexy! As long as you don’t build a Rosie O’Donnell head! Think svelte.
Six different heads would be ‘tres chic’ too- would keep you from getting bored replicating the same head 6X.
Whatever you decide, StandingBear, we are all in awe of your talent and dedication and can’t wait for the next installment. Best- Bert
P.S. would be great to have a water-jet cutter, wouldn’t it?- but I guess that would put it out of Dave’s insightful post about using common tools. Back to the good old elbow grease!

Carbomask- Looks like a good product for us white people to not stand out in the woods like a – white person! And since it’s better than Oil-of-Olay to cleanse our pores, it fits right in with my weekly pedicures and daily orange-stick nail maintenance- any chance to put some DEET in it to keep the buggers from ruining my make-up?
Check out the first forum- do you think you could infuse the anti-electromagnetic snakeoil so we could confuse our prey as to our electric signature?
Looks like a perfect product for our vaunted Special Forces to use in the Sandbox and the Rockpile(Iraq and Afghanistan), unfortunately they have to go through the Procurement Procedure who are REMFS- Good luck in your endeavors- I’ll buy it!-Bert

StandingBearBrother- If you could clarify for me- the blade and ferrule are separate and you braze, weld, mechanical fasten someway with screws or pins the ferrule to the blade? So this will be a screw in ferrule not a modified glue-on field point ala Jay Massey?
Having reread the excellent Dr. Ed Ashby’s arrow lethality reports- available on this website, and required study by all archery hunters IMAO- on broadhead mechanical efficiency, it seems the best we have currently is the ratio of 3-1- basically a straight edge Grizzly.
The minimum width allowed in Wa.State is 7/8 of an inch(you do the metric conversion!) so I would say at least 1 1/16-1 1/8 inches to allow for resharpening by at least 2 1/2-2 3/4 depending on the thickness and weight of the chosen steel.
Hey!- somebody sent me some nice carbon arrows with unholy PLASTIC VANES attached- they must come off immediately and carefully- There Shall Be No Plastic Vanes Allowed In This Household- besides I can’t shoot them off the shelf!
Stay toasty- hope you have a heater or better yet, a woodstove in your workshop- Bert

SB- Are we the only two posting?
Now this really piques my interest!!! Let,s see- single bevel-left- 25 degrees – I really like the design of the silverflame at Alaska Bowhunting but without the vents- that slight elliptical looks sharp instead of the boring straightness of the Ashby or Grizzlys( though they do work)- slight tanto or diamond tip- let’s see what the teslar comes up with. Now weight-hmmmmm- I assume you’re making glue-ons so we can up the package with aluminum or steel adaptors later- somewhere 150ish? What do you have for steel- 440b or c- 154CM- what would really be cool would be some Scandanavian stainless-clad with the harder sandwiched between two-layers of softer- nah, couldn’t really go with a single bevel then.
OK, I’ll quit bugging you and let you get back to your God-given work! This is going to be inspiring and FUN!!!

He really is Daniel Quevillon from Fort Simpson, Canada and a Master Knifemaker amongst many other accomplishments. He is truly too humble by far, you can check out some of his outstanding knives at the Lady Falcon website. His wife,Sylvie, makes some gorgeous, functional sheaths also.
Boys and girls, keep track of this forum for you are witnessing an artistic craftsman at his finest through hard work and talent, turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse!
SB- that looks like my work bench- except cleaner and you’re actually doing something on it!!!
P.S. The blade is sharp, so watch your fingers- I think I got most all my blood off before sending it to you!

American ingenuity at its best! What a wonderful product- it’ll sell like hotcakes for hundreds of iou notes and just think of the ancillary products that we’ll also need- such as; special anti-radiation glasses to keep that evil eye energy from spooking our intended prey; nose and mouth filters to scrub that nasty CO2 from our breath- hey, A. Gore is with that!
You could use it to save your life if your boat sank in the ocean to thwart the electromagnetic sensing pores on the snouts of vicious sharks just waiting to turn you into human sashimi!
Hallelujah!- I can finally get rid of this aluminum suit, hat and gloves that I usually hunt with- wonder why I didn’t bag a deer this year or any thing else for that matter! Couldn’t be the noise factor as I steathily sneak thru the woods like a giant piece of reflective crinkly foil- I mean I wear earplugs!
                    God help us!

Okay Patrick and StandingBear- time to step in here and tell the real story about the Cold Steel Trailmaster. After falling for all the hype decades ago- it’s Carbon5 steel!- It will cut a redwood down with a single stroke!- It has distal taper and a convex appleseed edge guaranteed to never wear, tear, shrink or fade!- and various other snakeoil inducements for the gullible- hey, I was younger and even more stupid than I am now, so cut me some slack! Come on, I grew up in the 50’s with Jim Bowie and the Alamo.
Anyway, its an honest 1095 carbon blade with a decent temper made in Japan, home of the truly awesome samurai swords and other edged tools and weapons- they know steel. I hated the rubber “Kraton” handle so cut it off and it went into the black hole of the unfinished projects drawer where it languished for years until SB made the mistake of offering very expensive carbon shafts in trade so I took advantage of his Canadian innocence and got rid of the albatross. Wait a minute- it cost me twice as much to ship to him as he to me!!
It is in good hands now- we are anticipating the resurrection, pictures and commentary on the rebuild,SB. Patrick can have it- if he wears it as a neck knife!
Truthfully, whoever ends up with this knife, may it serve them faithfully and true and may they take care of it responsibly to pass it on to future generations.
What an interesting journey a piece of steel in the shape of a blade has taken already- who knows where that journey will lead?
                      God Bless-Bert

This is a great and very informative read- thanks guys!
Unfortunately this year the only blood I’ve tracked is the selfsustained knife wound on my left thumb- say, that looks suspiciously like white knuckle amidst all the red!- caused by, of course, sheer unadulterated stupidity.
The Surefire LEDs with 2 lithium batteries REALLY light up the night and run cooler and longer than the bulb type. Anybody ever use or try a blue filter?
Another salient point- if you see cougar tracks over the blood spore and/or over your quarry’s prints, you can reasonable assume that YOU’RE HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION-Good Luck! Bert

Gentlemen and ladies- I thought this forum was for topics outside traditional bowhunting- did I misread the title?
I assure you I’m not a paranoid chicken-little running around screaming the black helicopters are coming to take our weapons and put us all in vile concentration camps! However, eternal vigilance is the price of liberty;remember also that every law in this land is backed by a gun- don’t pay your property taxes and you’ll quickly find out. Some say this is all a “smokescreen” but where there’s smoke it usually means there is a fire- check out what happened to the good citizens of Great Britain, Australia and Canada concerning gun rights- lost or severely curtailed not that long ago and you can’t bowhunt in Germany so it can affect us also.
I think SteveMcD nailed it when he wrote ‘termiting’- the slow erosion bit by bit until the foundation is rotten- the old “how do you boil a frog? answer- slowly!”
So we may sit on our blessed assets boasting ‘I got mine!’,
but what about your kids and their children- will they be allowed to have theirs? Will the Chinese Landlords of America permit bowhunting and will I have to plant a tree to buy a carbon arrow?!!
See what happens when bowhunting season is over- too much time to rant and rave as the old curmudgeon I’ve morphed into these past six decades and yes, GTA, those mastodons were vicious back in the days before the invention of the bow and EFOC!
Well, I survived Jimmy Carter so I guess I’ll survive the current TOTUS and assembled bureaucratic nightmare- but not without some bitchin’ and rumblin’.
Remember, boys and girls, the words of the great science-fiction writer, Robert Heinlein, who penned, “An armed society is a polite society” and now let’s return to the subject of self-knocks, shield or parabolic cut, different pointy and sharp things we can attach to our arrows and other more pleasing topics.
Bert the hoplophile(look that up, GTA!)

Happy New Year my fellow Americans(and to all hunters everywhere) but this post is primarily addressed to our country’s citizens who have, recently this past year, overturned the government rock. Not surprisingly, all manner of corrupt, naked, squishy, squirming bureaucrats, our representatives supposedly, have been caught and exposed in flagrante delicto as the rapacious crooks we knew they were- it’s the breadth and extent and outright contempt they show us as they unabashedly power-grab and greedily line their own rotten nests that is so shocking.
So be it, do not return the rock to its original place, do not ignore nor excuse, or say you’re too tired, it’s just “politics”- sunshine is the best disinfectant and an informed and armed citizenry, engaged and proactive in defense of their God-given liberty, freedom and responsibilities is the best deterrent to tyrany- soft or hard, then, now, or in the future.
                              If we’re willing to fight.
                              An unarmed man is a serf;
                              Armed, a citizen.
Our Rights are Quietly being Stripped Away!- resolve to be quiet no more.
Resolve to educate yourself and instruct others on this country’s essentials- read or reread the Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence this year.
Resolve to share these with your co-workers, neighbors and relatives, esp. your children and other young people as they sure ain’t gettin’ it in public schools.
Resolve to use the soap box, the ballot box and pray that we don’t have to resort to the third American box- the ammunition box.
As a sixty year-old baby-boomer- oh cursed generation!- so much for sailing into the sunset all warm and fuzzy to LaLaLand to bask in the refulgent rays of self-indulgence and bellybutton meditation!
I resolve to get off my “blessed asset”- Ephesians chapter six myself and get to work as a Happy Warrior- looks like 2010 is going to be a very ‘interesting’ year, to say the least!- well, the only easy day was yesterday and ‘pain is weakness leaving the body’!
May God bless all of you and yours this New Years day and may the Good Lord continue to bless America.
                              Nemo me impune lacessit.
                              MOLON LABE!

                                  Hey Steve-?
I think it’s a variation of Southern Cal valley speak where every sentence ends on an upward intonation- drives me nuts too!
Say what you mean and mean what you say- listen to some speeches by Churchill, Reagan and Thatcher. No it wasn’t ” Mr. Gorbechov, tear down this wall?” or “We shall never give up?” or “The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money?”
