in reply to: Real Tree or Artificial #161747
Well ……………… Wally World started Xmas in September this year so it must be time to start feeling guilty about getting the Xmas cards out.
Plaids ?? Several years ago a noted predator caller named Gerry Blair wanted to make a point about remaining motionless being more important than the latest designer camo. Sooooo …….. Just for yucks & giggles he dressed up in a red & white Santa suit and called in coyotes and a herd of javelina to up close distances.
in reply to: Real Tree or Artificial #161729One thing about a real tree (other than the fire hazard) …………….. Where I grew up in SW Michigan, after Xmas people would chain a cinder block to the trunk and haul it out on the ice at the local lake. Come spring it would sink and become fish habitat.
in reply to: Real Tree or Artificial #161716I prefer a live tree that I can plant somewhere on the property after Xmas.
in reply to: Thinking of getting into trad….again. #161693Welcome to the party !!!!
FWIW; I’m partial to older classic recurves that I find now & then on ebay. They may (or may not) be as fast as some of the newer custom bows but they will hold their own f they’re tuned and shot with good form.
in reply to: Going to give Sitka Spruce a try. #161669“Have a older blacktail, about 96 uses dacron”
?????
Ok ……….. I’m a wee bit confused. Guessing that ‘blacktail’ is a bow model. The ‘about 96’ got me ??? 1996 or 96 lbs ???? Three of my shoulder joints popped just thinking about pulling 96 pounds. 1996 on the other hand I guess would be ‘old’. My Super Diablo was made in the late 60s or early 70s. Some of the old bows still rock !!!!
in reply to: Going to give Sitka Spruce a try. #161661According to my copy of The Traditional Bowhunter’s Handbook, written by some guy named Tee Jay up in Idaho, which I believe is a county in Southern Canada; (To paraphrase, Good shaft. Straightness can be an issue.) Since field point / blunt straight is not the same as broadhead straight, it would seem that monitoring shaft straightness and making your arrows accordingly would make sense. Then checking shaft straightness regularly would probably be wise.
in reply to: Going to give Sitka Spruce a try. #161644Hi Ronald; Welcome aboard !!!
I’ve toyed with the idea of going back to shooting wood but am still flinging 2213s.
Please let us know your thoughts on the spruce once you’ve tried them.
What kind of stick(s) are you shooting ??? I’m currently on a retro kick and shooting a Damon Howatt Super Diablo.
in reply to: Question ; How straight is ‘straight’ ?? #161612Here’s something to NOT do with plastic bottles.
NOT EVER !!!!
There’s a kit that you can buy to pump about 90 psi of air into a 2 liter plastic bottle. Think popping a balloon on steroids plus. They’re sold to the air rifle crowd. Seemed kinda cool so I set one up and hung it on my bales. Backed off to the 60 yard line to make it challenging. 1st arrow just right. 2nd arrow just left. 3rd arrow just right again. 4th arrow; KABOOM!!! …….. and 4 bent arrows from the blast.
in reply to: Question ; How straight is ‘straight’ ?? #161605This thing with wood shafts is probably why Mr. Hill would shoot his newly finished arrows at distance into a dirt bank and then bundle them as right – left & center shooters.
in reply to: Ranch Fairy YouTube #161503I contacted him a while back about guided and / or unguided feral pig hunts.
His goofy handle not-withstanding he seemed like somebody who would run a good hunt. Note that I said ‘a hunt’ and not ‘ a shoot’.
Sadly, it’s not offered. I think that the guy’s missing an opportunity to run a hunt and campfire seminars that would be entertaining and at the same time informative.
Just my $0.02 worth.
in reply to: Building that EFOC & UEFOC arrow #161400A while ago I was rebuilding a set of arrows and just for yucks & giggles I weighed the shafts before & after I stripped the fletching off. Turns out my 5 1/2 ” shield cut feathers add 15 grains to the rearward section of the shaft. After pondering this long & hard I came to the conclusion that I was tuning a bare shaft that had a different weight and balance point than my shooting arrows.
Pretty simple solution was to weigh lengths of electrical tape added to the fletch area.
in reply to: Whatch Got Going 2022 #161179Sorry to hear about problems with ebay. I guess that maybe I’ve been lucky, so far.
My latest too much time on my hands project is my tribute to Ben Pearson.
A Pearson Mercury Hunter with a Pearson bow quiver filled with Pearson DeadHeads mounted on replica Pearson Tracer arrows. Matching target arrows in a Pearson hip quiver w/ Pearson Pro-Staff belt buckle.
It makes a pretty nice package & I’m going to use it at an upcoming shoot to honor Ben Pearson.
If WE don’t remember, then who ????
in reply to: Whatch Got Going 2022 #161153Aeronut; I just went to ebay & searched ‘carbon paper’. 1400 hits came back. Prices seemed pretty reasonable, too.
in reply to: Target “Shed” #161090Suggestion; Try going to Wally World or some such supply house and picking up some of the ratchet tie-downs with the long straps. I double strap each individual bale and then long strap the entire stack with a couple more. This lets me re-tighten everything back up.
I also hang the rubber pad across the top of the top bale and let it hand down like a mud flap. When an arrow point does penetrate thru the bale the pad has enough give to it to absorb enough energy to keep the fletch out of the bales.
Another thing is to vary the targets position on the bales. Up close I tend to shoot at ping pong balls hanging on string nearer to the edges of the bales or on the bottom bale to simulate a close rabbit or snake shot. Farther back it’s the paper plate toward the center o t bales. Spreads the wear & tear on the bales over a wider area.
