in reply to: Whatcha Got Going 2023? #163368
Wind is likewise annoying here in S.E. Az. Really hard to fine tune form when your bowarm is being blown around.
I understand about contractors. Hard to find one that answers the phone and does good work. Too many of today’s youth more interested in computer science and woke political courses than learning any of the trades. Funny thing though, guys that can turn wrenches & such can make serious coin these days.

in reply to: Arrow Wood Help #163195Dan, …………………….. Greetings from S.E. Arizona.
Have you tried bamboo ??? The Kyudo shooters use it and they draw back past their ear.
FWIW; Our most cherished icon, Howard Hill was a big fellow and in his books mentioned adapting his shooting style for a shorter arrow. Notably, the bent elbow of the bow-arm.
Good luck & let us know what works for you.
in reply to: Whatcha Got Going 2023? #163186Dirty water and just a wee bit early for the spawn made for a tough day. Got four shots and landed one carp, about an eight pounder. Got a new recipe to try on it.
All in all, good to get out.
in reply to: Whatcha Got Going 2023? #163163Well, the slaughter on the water didn’t happen. Company stopped by and the wind came up. Roosevelt is not a place to be in a canoe when the whitecaps are up. Going to re-try on Monday.
70# is one of those ‘Do as I say, …. not as I do’ things. Far & away more better to shoot a lower poundage bow accurately than some macho poundage that scatters arrows. I normally shoot a lower poundage than the 70# .
in reply to: Whatcha Got Going 2023? #163154Turning the big seven zero tomorrow so I thought that to commemorate the event I’d pull the 70# Howatt Hunter off the rack and try a few shots. Managed to get off five good shots before the body said that if I kept it up it was gonna hurt me bad.
Bowfishing out of the canoe at Roosevelt for carp tomorrow. I’ll take the 55xx pound carp bow and leave the big stick at home.
in reply to: Whatcha Got Going 2023? #163002Very sorry to hear this.
in reply to: Whatcha Got Going 2023? #162743Since my wife had ankle surgery I’m pretty much head nurse & house maid. I am able to get out to my modest range out back and work on form and to my shop to build more of my ‘solar powered arrows’.
If any of you folks find yourselves in S.E. Arizona, the Welcome Mat’s out.
in reply to: Fred Asbell #162370Sad news, indeed.
I didn’t always agree with everything that Fred wrote but I always respected him. Hopefully, his memory will live on in those he influenced.
in reply to: For those who shoot more than one bow…. #162355FWIW ;
I have more bows than I know what to do with sometimes. With very few exceptions they are mostly 60# @28″ and most are 60″ length.
Several reasons for this. First and foremost, they all shoot the same arrow. A 2213 / 150 gr points on a 40 gr screw in insert. 3 fletch / helical. With my anchor my point on is 45 yards with my #1 bow, a Damon Howatt Super Diablo. So ……. some bows shoot a little higher at 45 with a point on hold and some shoot a bit lower.
However ………… If I maintain form ( back tension) left & right should not be an issue with a tuned bow.
Couple of thing to watch out for; Head position with a heavier or lighter bow can drive you mad. Heeling the bow can affect high & low. Last but far from least …….. low right groups scream “You’re dropping your bow arm”. ……….. which is another way of saying ‘back tension’.
Good luck & keep us posted.
in reply to: The Super Diablo is still super !! #162210Raccoon calling is something I want to try. I have the fight sound, a river bottom full of ‘coon tracks and the banks lined thick with salt cedar. It’s even in a legal night hunting area.
Sadly ……….. the area is also full of pretty impressive bear tracks and that Unit is NOT open for bear. Calling in a bear is a real rush but I would prefer to have a shooting option.
in reply to: Arrow weight specs ???? #162116Scale & spine tester I have. Even have a decibel meter. (Yes, heavy arrows do shoot quitter than light ones)
The one gizmo that I regret not getting when I had the chance is a shooting machine that went up to 45*.
in reply to: Christmas Time #162107Ditto what he said !!!!!
in reply to: Arrow weight specs ???? #162096“All wood will absorb liquid in varying amounts”.
That’s some interesting food for thought. It would imply that finished shaft weight could be somewhat adjusted by applying a heavier coat to light shafts and a lighter coat to the heavier ones. …………. Evening out the average weight.
in reply to: Real Tree or Artificial #161803For those people putting or considering putting a real tree in your homes, PLEASE google ‘christmas tree fire’.
Just sayn’ …………………… Scary stuff.
