Raccoon calling is something I want to try. I have the fight sound, a river bottom full of ‘coon tracks and the banks lined thick with salt cedar.  It’s even in a legal night hunting area.

Sadly ……….. the area is also full of pretty impressive bear tracks and that Unit is NOT open for bear.  Calling in a bear is a real rush but I would prefer to have a shooting option.

Scale & spine tester I have. Even have a decibel meter. (Yes, heavy arrows do shoot quitter than light ones)

The one gizmo that I regret not getting when I had the chance is a shooting machine that went up to 45*.

“All wood will absorb liquid in varying amounts”.

That’s some interesting food for thought. It would imply that finished shaft weight could be somewhat adjusted by applying a heavier coat to light shafts and a lighter coat to the heavier ones. …………. Evening out the average weight.

Well ……………… Wally World started Xmas in September this year so it must be time to start feeling guilty about getting the Xmas cards out.

Plaids ??  Several years ago a noted predator caller named Gerry Blair wanted to make a point about remaining motionless being more important than the latest designer camo.  Sooooo …….. Just for yucks & giggles he dressed up in a red & white Santa suit and called in coyotes and a herd of javelina to up close distances.

One thing about a real tree (other than the fire hazard) …………….. Where I grew up in SW Michigan, after Xmas people would chain a cinder block to the trunk and haul it out on the ice at the local lake. Come spring it would sink and become fish habitat.

I prefer a live tree that I can plant somewhere on the property after Xmas.

                      Welcome to the party !!!!

FWIW;  I’m partial to older classic recurves that I find now & then on ebay. They may (or may not) be as fast as some of the newer custom bows but they will hold their own f they’re tuned and shot with good form.

“Have a older blacktail, about 96 uses dacron”

                        ?????

Ok ……….. I’m a wee bit confused. Guessing that ‘blacktail’ is a bow model. The ‘about 96’ got me ??? 1996 or 96 lbs ????  Three of my shoulder joints popped just thinking about pulling 96 pounds.  1996 on the other hand I guess would be ‘old’. My Super Diablo was made in the late 60s or early 70s. Some of the old bows still rock !!!!

According to my copy of The Traditional Bowhunter’s Handbook, written by some guy named Tee Jay up in Idaho, which I believe is a county in Southern Canada; (To paraphrase, Good shaft.  Straightness can  be an issue.)  Since field point / blunt straight is not the same as broadhead straight,  it would seem that monitoring shaft straightness and making your arrows accordingly would make sense.  Then checking shaft straightness regularly would probably be wise.

                            Hi Ronald;   Welcome aboard !!!

I’ve toyed with the idea of going back to shooting wood but am still flinging 2213s.

Please let us know your thoughts on the spruce once you’ve tried them.

What kind of stick(s) are you shooting ??? I’m currently on a retro kick and shooting a Damon Howatt Super Diablo.

Here’s something to NOT do with plastic bottles.

                              NOT EVER !!!!

There’s a kit that you can buy to pump about 90 psi of air into a 2 liter plastic bottle.  Think popping a balloon on steroids plus. They’re sold to the air rifle crowd.  Seemed kinda cool so I set one up and hung it on my bales.  Backed off to the 60 yard line to make it challenging. 1st arrow just right. 2nd arrow just left. 3rd arrow just right again. 4th arrow; KABOOM!!! …….. and 4 bent arrows from the blast.

This thing with wood shafts is probably why Mr. Hill would shoot his newly finished arrows at distance into a dirt bank and then bundle them as right – left & center shooters.

I contacted him a while back about guided and / or unguided feral pig hunts.

His goofy handle not-withstanding he seemed like somebody who would run a good hunt. Note that I said ‘a hunt’ and not ‘ a shoot’.

Sadly, it’s not offered. I think that the guy’s missing an opportunity to run a hunt and campfire seminars that would be entertaining and at the same time informative.

                                  Just my $0.02 worth.
