A while ago I was rebuilding a set of arrows and just for yucks & giggles I weighed the shafts before & after I stripped the fletching off.  Turns out my 5 1/2 ” shield cut feathers add 15 grains to the rearward  section of the shaft.  After pondering this long & hard I came to the conclusion that I was tuning a bare shaft that had a different weight and balance point than my shooting arrows.

Pretty simple solution was to weigh lengths of electrical tape added to the fletch area.

Sorry to hear about problems with ebay. I guess that maybe I’ve been lucky, so far.

My latest too much time on my hands project is my tribute to Ben Pearson.

A Pearson Mercury Hunter with a Pearson bow quiver filled with Pearson DeadHeads mounted on replica Pearson Tracer arrows. Matching target arrows in a Pearson hip quiver w/ Pearson Pro-Staff belt buckle.

It makes a pretty nice package & I’m going to use it at an upcoming shoot to honor  Ben Pearson.

If WE don’t remember, then who ????

Aeronut;  I just went to ebay & searched ‘carbon paper’. 1400 hits came back. Prices seemed pretty reasonable, too.

Suggestion;  Try going to Wally World or some such supply house  and picking up some of the ratchet tie-downs  with the long straps.  I double strap each individual bale and then long strap the entire stack with a couple more.  This lets me re-tighten everything back up.

I also hang the rubber pad across the top of the top bale and let it hand down like a mud flap. When an arrow point does penetrate thru the  bale the pad has enough give to it to absorb enough energy to keep the fletch out of the bales.

Another thing is to vary the targets position on the bales.  Up close I tend to shoot at ping pong balls hanging on string nearer to the edges of the bales or on the bottom bale to simulate a close rabbit or snake shot.  Farther back it’s the paper plate toward the center o t bales.  Spreads the wear & tear on the bales over a wider area.

I suspect that the guy who coined the phrase “Rust never sleeps”  lived back east where they salt the roads in the winter.

To all of you new folks …………… Greetings !!!!

I sincerely hope that you all remain active on the Forum.  Be assured that you cannot make some dumb mistake that us ‘old timers’ have not already made.  Sometimes more than once………… or twice.  Another thing, more than once, a ‘noobie’ has asked a question or made a comment that I found so basic that I could not believe that I hadn’t thought of it myself.

Now; …………………….. Question;  Does anybody know of any upcoming 3-D shoots, possibly around N. Mexico, that we could use as a ‘Get Together’  location to fling pointed sticks & tell tall tales ????

Ok ………………… At close range the point of your arrow at full draw is below the spot that you want to hit. Probably somewhere down around the bottom of the bales. As your move back a few yards at a time you will need to raise your aim.  This is where it gets interesting. You can aim ‘instinctive’ looking only at the spot to be hit.  Another aiming option is  the ‘gap’ system where while looking at the spot to be hit the point of the arrow is seen in the peripheral  vision below the spot to be hit.  This ‘gap’ is seen ‘at the bow’.  With my set-up at 40 yards (for example) my gap is one arrow width below the spot.  This gap will hold true at 40 yards on my range, your range or out in the sand wash hunting jackrabbits.  Lastly, there is the Hill Method  which is similar to the gap except that the point of the arrow, again seen in the peripheral vision, is placed a certain distance below the spot to be hit at the target.  Where I would ‘gap’ the shot at 40 yards as one arrow width at the bow, with the Hill method I would look about 12 inches below the spot I want to hit ‘at the bales’ and put the point of the arrow there.  Again with the peripheral vision.

Ok ……………. Still with me ???

Now, as you move back at some distance you will elevate your aim until the point of your arrow is superimposed over the target. Again with the peripheral vision, keep your eye on the prize always.   This is your point on distance.  Once you find that distance, unless something changes (arrow set-up, draw length, etc.) your point on distance will remain the same.  For me, it’s 45 yards. My range, your range, or stumps in the woods, if I put the point on the target at 45 yards I should hit it.

Now, what’s it good for ?? Let’s say your point on distance is 45 yards and you notice that your arrows are hitting low at 45 yards. Barring a bowstring that’s going bad, (record your brace height)  that would be a clue that something in your form   has changed. Possibly head position or losing back tension.

                        Clear as mud, eh ???

                        Couple of books that you might want to keep an eye out for on ebay;

The Traditional Bowhunters Handbook / T.J. Conrads                                                                                                                               Shooting the Stickbow / Anthony Camera                                                                                                                                                      Principles of Traditional Archery / Thomas Grissom

These guys can explain this stuff better than I can.

                          Outstanding !!!!

What I would suggest now is to increase your distance until you find your ‘point on’.  It’s a useful tid-bit of information that comes in handy as you make changes / improvements to your set-up & form.

As you move back, always remember; The form is the same, near or far. The only difference is how you aim.

Stay with it ………. Seriously, you’re doing great.

                              Ray,

I just Googled zaaz company.  It’s an exercise machine outfit that will get you in shape with less effort.  Sounds like their may be snake oil involved.  I could be wrong, but I DO own a private gym.

Shot the Safford Paper Plate Round yesterday. 10 to 70 yards, one arrow every 5 yards, 13 shots total.  Scored 8 hits and did the Happy Snoopy Dance all of the way back to the workshop.

You might try getting in touch with the local Game Warden for suggestions and then just plain old boots on the ground scouting. Things change. One of my favorite spots in years past has recently become overgrown to the point of being impossible to hunt for the deer that have moved on.  A good or bad acorn crop can really move the deer, too.
