I shoot by instinct and I do tell my self how far away my target is, but by the “5’s”, 5-10-15-20-25-30 in the pre-shot sequence.

I’ll pick an object, guess the range and pace it off while out and about to stay in “tune”.

I’m also one of those guys that can read long yardages pretty good to the amazement of myself and friends(varified by lazer), and time checks are uncanny since I don’t wear a watch. Blessed??? VooDoo??? I haven’t a clue hehehe

Guessing yardage across canyons is harder, but what works for me is to cup my hands around my eyes, kinda making ‘air binos” to block out all but the target object.

While guessing miles away in the desert/mountains, there is an old desert-rat saying “take your first guess, then times it by 2” to account for ups and downs in the terrain.

(There are plastic covered range cards in most of my set-ups, either glassing points or r^$%e stands for quick reference)

Very Nice!!! Kinda cool that I’m 2500miles away and I can see that west slope in my mind(I hunted on West Point land)…

hehhe DocNock… Alot of rocks look to be “man made”, nice to see the good prof has a sense of humor…

I just found alittle arrowhead at a friends place here in AZ, in a wash(seasonal stream), neat little Barreal 9000-7200BP with an impact tip fracture, which means it either hit bone or missed and dinged the tip…

To right R2, everything in the SW either pokes, stabs or wants to bite you… A simular seed pod in the fall woods of NY rattles like a buzz worm and makes me jump like alittle girl, then I realise I’m in the cold north east… hehehe…

There are places with poison ivy/oak in AZ…

R2, Those tunas look ripe and ready to pick!!! (For the Northern hunters: Tunas are the bright red fruit of the prickly pear, they make a very goood juice thats good for the body and excellent on, grilled chicken, asperagas(sp), and as a drink…And Yes Deer eat them!!!)

Shin daggers, cat-claw and steep rocky cliffs (not to mention smuggling/illegal imigration) make night trailing an adventure in the SW…

The liquid coffee is ‘Java juice’, expensive, but goood stuff…

There are some camping type chairs out there, most are to small and un-comfortable or have arms that arent good for bow hunting off of though, maybe find one you can cut/bend the arms out of the way??? Good Luck…

… Forager quote: “Many times, the hunt truly begins after the shot. That hunt will test more about a hunter and his/her will, desire, and ethics than most any hunt before the shot ever could. “
