in reply to: Sixth Sense #27931

The sixth sense of animals is something I find amazing, how they can appear to read my intent at times, during scouting out of season, I can get close to Deer and have even talked to them without them spooking off (Yeah, kinda crazy I know hehehe), but let me have a Bow in hand and they seem to know there is danger around them even when they dont pick me out… Coues being the most high-strung, wary critter I’ve ever Hunted…

I’m a Roofer also Grumpy, working Slate is a dying art, Kudos to you…

A humans “sixth sense” is a real and powerfull “skill” that I have seen and experienced in some sketchy situations where one persons “gut-feeling” determined a possitive outcome (for us anyway)…

Had to have the caffine blast, instant coffee from Mexico because it was SO CHILLY this morning, 41degrees at sunrise and warming to 71degrees in the afternoon in the Mt’s with a coool breeze blowing off the snow capped peaks…

Hehehe, Sorry all my friends from the northern climes, had to rub-it-in alittle…

NVG’s, like most things, take some getting used to while walking/running in the dark, perceptions are skewed, the high=pitched whine gave me a sharp headache after a few hours, (They did give me a fine sense of Joy at one time)…

Personaly have no use for them now, my night vision is fine, 20/15 with contacts and the critters I hunt dont shoot-back anymore…

For walking out of the woods/Mt’s safely there would nothing wrong with them, but a flashlight seems a better idea(put a red-filter over the light if your worried about spooking game, dont wave the light around or just cup your fingers over the light to ‘dim” output…

in reply to: Spring Turkey Hunt #22862

I like to hunt turkeys just like Deer, set-up in tree-stands along field edge where they are coming out in the morning, decoy is nice to have, I just use gentle calling, hen clucks…

For a more active hunt, I’ll find the area they are tree’d up at night by shock-gobbling at sunset and listening for an answer, then being close at sunrise to call after they fly-down…

I call as little as possible, they get educated fast…

Stalk really slow and quiet to within 100yards of the night trees, then be set BEFORE they fly-down…

Good Luck and Enjoy… (YUMMM on the Morels, do you use them yourself or sell to high-end restaurants??? (Good money from a traditional pastime)

                      Is it 1January 2014 YET???

I’m getting twichy for the begining of my Bow Season, checked an area I normaly set a tree-stand and found a salt-block, recently placed out, about 40yards from the tree.

I found out who it was from another web-site, Good guy that I put on some Coues during the rifle season, I shared info on the class of Coues in that area and found out what each other are driving so we can share the spot without hassles…

It may be a blessing, because I went farther up-slope and built a ground blind in a spot where I always wanted to make one, VERY heavy sign with a good set-up of constricted trails coming together, so hopefully the beast Coues I’ve been seeing the last couple of years with no shot offered, gives me look this year and the Recurve can sing…

This is the BEST trad-site around, very respectfull folks with no ego-pumping…

I would share camp with anyone here, except Grumpy, we couldnt have TWO of us in camp at the same time, J/K Grumpy hehehe…

                          I’m almost always avaliable for hunting(and a few brews)…

Alititude is more taxing for visitors to the Mountains, town is around 3200ft, and trailhead is at 5200ft, doesnt sound like much but I get little twinges of Alt sickness when I over do huntd that take me up high(headaches, dehydration)… Tanking-up with water, a couple of asprins before hand and it fixes me fine…

Really though… The coldest I’ve ever been while bow hunting is the Mt’s of So. Arizona, must be the “dry” cold…

Enjoyment with trad-gear is different for each person, I dont HAVE to shoot a Deer, but I do need to hunt. On my terms with a recurve. During the next month I will go through being cold, tired, hungery, and burned-out from climbing the Mt everyday before sun-rise. But also filled with a sense of wonder, excitment, and knowing everything can change in a minute…

It sounds like you have come to terms with your Enjoyment Factor also…

A 20min. drive will take you from trailhead to pool with an adult beverage to ponder the next days hunt…

Glad you are enjoying the journey…

ROAD TRIP!!! Arizona is just starting Bow season, over-the-counter tags for Coues or Muley, you’ll be hunting during the long rut and not up to your back pockets in snow.

If it’s to chilly in the Mountains, rest assured it’s warmer in the Valley and the pools always open…

We have been getting some goood snow storms the last few days in the Santa Ritas, So. Arizona…

Arizona is on a draw system for most big game rifle permits, points for Elk, point “creep” and all the nonsence involved with a very short season with many hunters in the same unit at the same time. I havent applyed for rifle Deer tags in over 20years here, put your applcation in June for a december hunt and hope the mountain doesnt burn down before the hunt is as stressfull as the 4-6days to get a Buck on the ground… NOT enjoyable at all to me…

Cattle not allowed in the National Forest I hunt(Coronado)///

AZ Game and Fish is run by political appointies and isnt for the “common” man/family…

Archery Deer permits are still over the counter… and still a great bargan with long seasons State-wide…
