Isn’t the full version of your tag line “Another beautiful day to excel … in the Marine Corps!” Took me a while to connect, as it’s now 40 years behind me, whoah!

It was my DI’s favorite saying in the morning… along with some other sayings that are NOT printable hehehehe…

Amazing the things that stay with you for life…

The subject is usually human forms with animals, along with geometric symbols… What story they are telling??? Maybe ” Big-horn Sheep and Deer Here!!!” …

I find ‘rock art” here in AZ, and it is a point of interest that it is only in select spots, not like it’s all over the place… So I tend to believe it was done in spots that held special spritual meaning to the ancients…??? Most I find are in what is now dry, water-less areas, stand-alone peaks, or on mountain tops…(the older cultures used the higher land, protection from animals/human raiders, and then they moved into the low-lands as their social structure advanced…)

(There was someone that did alot of recent rock peekings(hammer and chisel work) in the Santa Ritas, Deer tracks going up a cliff face, a “sleeping Bear” on a peak called Sleeping Bear, etc… I think he was caught bragging about his “art” and was heavly fined…Defaceing Public Lands)

Sounds like a great adventure AusJim… Maybe a light coating of Wd-40 or other light-weight oil would keep the rust at bay for a few days???… You need to aim lower at your target when bow-fishing due to refraction…

Camel is delish, had a feast after some training, the young camel that showed-up in the back of a truck as the ‘guest of honor” for our feast wasnt impressed as us though…

(Also learned about “baboon relocation” on that trip… Baboons are destructive critters and some cultures wont kill them, so to remove a pack of Baboons they would capture one, paint him in gold paint(I guess any color would work) and release him to re-join the pack. Since they are a social animal they will try to RV with the pack and the others are so spooked they run off, 20-30miles or untill the paint wears-off and the baboons are then someone elses problem…hehehe)

Outfitters/Guides are doing WHATEVER they can to grab the money…Helo drops into land-locked property, multi-Guides scattered over the Mt’s with radio contact for one big money “hunter”, blocking public roads in National forests to keep-out “Joe-Hunter”, etc….

Glad to see at least one State has gotten in front of the drone issue…

(A few years ago I was getting my Hunting Guide licence in Arizona, and after talking to a few outfitters/guides, and seeing the “Get the game at ALL costs” mentality, I stopped the process, My goal was never to get rich or “famous”, just share my love of the Arizona Mt’s with others… One outfitter/guide is so fed-up with the maddness he doesnt advertise anymore, and just does hunts for Wounded Warrior and Make-A-Wish group and his repeat hunters… I have done the same and the reward for me helping others is something money could never buy…)

Ut Oh, sorry Robin if this went off Traditional Topics…

I had an old rabbit hide blanket that I had over the back of my couch, Indian made (probably early 1900’s) with the brain-tanned hide cut into strips, twisted then woven together, super warm and comfy… And, an old GF loved to cover-up while watching TV with it ” It’s so soft, warm and it has a “Man smell”… After I told her what it was and how it was made she never used it again hehehee… NYC women can be so clueless at times…

Great Find!!! I have seen antlers shed in oct in NY, they actually came off as the deer was being draged out… And once saw an 8pointer still sporting his antlers on 1April, also in NY, on way to opening day trout river…

I spend alot of time shed-hunting/scouting in AZ, a good excuse to get out into new country…

I’ve been shooting trad-gear since I was 8years old, and at 52 I’m still learning… Lesson from this is- Dont turn-off the Hunting mode untill there is ZERO chance of a shot… Then turn-on photog mode… hehehe…

Tribal names are a ‘recent’ invention, but Yes the Apache Tribe called the Santa Ritas home and would enter the low-lands/Valleys to attack/raid the more settled T.O./Yaqui peoples…

Around Christmass there is a group from the TO and Yaqui Nation that does a run with drums from the center of Madera Canyon in the Santa Ritas and goes to the Rez in Tucson and ends at San Xavier Church(oldest church in North America, also called ” White Dove of the Desert”). And I see Tribal members collecting bear-grass in the winter for their Basket weaving…

My personal joke is ” No wonder the Apaches were so War-like, climbing these Mountains would make anyone mean”…

Found a broken Matate the other day, 2 of the three pieces, didnt think to take a photo, just turned it over and left it there… Probably the 10th one I’ve found in AZ…

(Most matate’s are found broken, attack by rival tribe, white man, kinda like ” After I plunder what I can, I’ll bust your gear so it’s harder for you to eat” war-fare)

I have always been an early riser, and dont realy need alot of sleep, to be in the Woods/Mountains/on my fav trout river/bonefish flat before sunrise is a Joy I hold dear and if I’m late I feel I’ve missed something… But…

When it runs on into weeks it does give me burn-out, but taking a day off or starting later re-focuses me and I’m good-to-go (only been climbing a mountain every morning in the dark for a week now so still focused)…

I’m not sure what makes Coues so hyper-aware, but having Big Cats around may be a factor, I wont even attempt to hunt them at a water source, they are way to high-strung as they approach…

I was coming off the Mountain and checked a saddle that always has some scrapes in it, and noticed all the lightening struck trees from the monsoons. If the tree was old with a thick trunk, it was hit, 7-8 in a small area above the saddle. Of note also was signs of an old cooper/silver/gold mine on this tiny peak, I wonder if the amount of minerals in the ground is acting like a lightening rod???

The Santa Ritas are covered in Live Oaks, 4-5 different types, many with Burls that would make a woodworker drool with the possiblitys. The acorns are small and sweet, not bitter at all.

In most areas they appear like some giants Bonsai garden, only getting 10-15feet tall, with thick trunks and twisted limbs.

The steepness of the terrain doesnt show well in photos, but where rainwater is funneled into any place that has a chance to hold it, however briefly, there is a change in the soil, going from a poor tan, rocky dirt to a rich black dirt, the trees are more “normal” looking in these areas…

Had a nice Buck chase a doe past at 70yards and a Doe pass at 10yards Sunday morning…
