Yeah, it had some nice frayed camo burlap looped off the hat… Most Boonie hats have a brim that is to big, this one was just right sized and I’ve had it for more than 10years, now the Hunt is on for another boonie…
in reply to: Couple of Dead-Heads(Coues) #44076I’ve only explored this cut from the area I found the deadheads, to a downward direction, I’ll have to explore up-slope next time I’m in that area…
Cameras are set-out for the aug2014 Bear bow season and they have been there for 3weeks now, my knee is messed-up and I need to rest it as much as I can, so a trip to retreave cams is on hold… Cant wait to see whats crossing a small saddle paved in bear scat…
in reply to: Hybred Deer in AZ. #16451In the lower transition zones where Mulies and Coues are intermixed I have spotted Bucks that are large bodied, smalled tailed(dark patched) with white-tail antler forms(basket-racked with eye-grards). I dont spend alot of time in these lower areas, so I’m going on others reports as to their numbers, but a friend has been Bowhunting a hybred, mulie body, white-tail antler form(high and wide 12pointer/eastern count)for the past couple of years…
While he is open and sharing with hunt info normaly, this buck is one he never has photos of and is secretive on location…
in reply to: Nice turkey hunting find #12019Super find!!! Yup, it’s looks to be a Pickwick(well made, complete examples sell for 100’s of $$$), prob. a camp-site in that area, Hunt ‘Heads!!!… Coastal plains chert???
It is amazing to make finds like this, and know your hunting land that was used thousands of years ago by peoples using basicly the same gear…
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #60386Coues and Mulies, though the Mulies have dropped in population there are some BIG bucks around, along with some hybreds, in the mesquite/oak transition zone…
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #57492Where are you located Arid Zone A??? Maybe there is enough interest for hunters in the northern units as well as down south…
Plenty of room for bow hunters to have their “own” areas, and most are “easy” to get into so you “flat-landers” dont keel-over from alt. sickness hehehe…
(I’m in Green Valley,AZ…unit 34A, and my focus has been on the west slope of the Santa Rita mountains)
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #54910….
Good lion hunting? What kind of hounds do you have?
I dont have hounds, I use an elec caller… Still trying for my first MT. Lion…
in reply to: Just Breaking the Ice. #52794A big “Howdy” from another Arizona Desert Rat, I’m down in Green Valley, (I’m guessing your up north) and if you ever want to hit the Santa Ritas(west slope), let me know…
in reply to: Arizona Bear Season #48320Grasses, mast, fawns and other small game are all foods they hit here in So. Az…. I set cams along trails in canyons that have alot of Juniper trees, a favorite food here. The scat sign will still show from last year, and thats how I found a “scat-paved” bear canyon to hunt this year. They will also get into flipping rocks over for insect critters, so you can hear them doing this from a long ways off.
We also call our Bears here at our “stands”(no baiting of any kind allowed), walking into Canyons, setting-up in some cover and hitting a hurt rabbit/deer call… and hoping for a Bear to respond…
in reply to: Arizona Bear Season #47328They dont make a limit on male bears killed, you have 24hours to report your bear and when 5females are taken they shut-down the season the following wensday and the females limit is normaly hit that first weekend, so thats why the season is so short…
I skin, de-bone and pack my critters off the mountain, even a “short” hike is killer to attempt getting an animal out whole… I have done the “Lash-critter-to-a-Pole” and carry-it-out before, on flat, level ground it’s not so bad, in the MT’s it’s a form of torture…
WebMother is fitting and shows respect for all the work You do for this site, and it’s members Mamm (Please remember this post when/if I post something “questionable” hehehe)
Nicknames can be respectfull, so keep it Grumpy, it could give you lee-way in the future…
My “oneshot” nickname came from Dad/friends hearing a single shot off in the woods ” Yup, heard one shot this morning out at the end of the Valley, Dave is coming out with game”
(I’ll not admit to my second nickname(cruel bunch they are, but factual) while in the Marines, except under the effects of massive amounts of alcohol… hehehe)
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #38158GREAT!!!Always welcome to show others the amazing Santa Ritas…
It’s Mt. Lion hunting season for me now, untill the aug23-Oct3 archery bear season, velvet deer is open aug23-sept12, but I’d rather deer hunt while they are in hard-horn…(1jan2015-31jan2015 in 34A)….
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #38026Alot of Javis and Coues, along with some monster mule deer, jackrabbits(both kinds, the “Black-tail” jack rabbit is massive), 3-4 different types of quail and dove galore.
Archery deer tags are over the counter, Javi tags are draw only, get Deer tags at walmart in Green Valley, camping at Bog Springs campground in Madera Canyon($10.00 at day), Coronado National Forest, open hunting 1/4mile from your camp site, either oak/pinion forest or head west for more open terrain, good for glassing/spot and stalk.
The Santa Ritas are a steep Mt range going from 4500ft to around 9000ft, but I use some of human trails to get me up-slope then cut off into the canyons I want to hunt, so it’s realy not that bad for the most part…
Very little hunting pressure in the Canyon, many cuts to explore, safe area from the illegals, though carrying a side-arm is always a wise move…(legal to carry during archery seasons, or anytime for that matter)…
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #36539If 34A, Santa Rita Mountains west slope, outside of Green Valley,AZ is an area your looking at, I’m all-in… Great camping ground right in the Mts(water/bathrooms/tables/firering, etc)…
