I have been shooting longobws for a long time now and have gravitated toward Bamboo they just seem to work for me and exibit very little handshock even at the 80# and 90# draw weights. But i really have the bug to get a yew longbow after looking at pics of some old St Charles bows.
So does anyone own a Yew longbow? How do you like it and who made it how does it perform etc.

Hey Codger,
I shoot a yew selfbow I made myself. Its the first yew bow I’ve made. I love it. probably second only to osage orange. The hardest part is finding a tree that is not twisted or without knots and branches. It has great cast and memory.
As for hand shock. I only recently shot a laminated recurve for the first time, and man it was smooth! So my selfbows have more hand shock than laminated bows, but that may be my design error, not sure.
Anyway I love the stuff. Have a few staves drying and will be working on some more bows this winter.

Back in ’84 Ron Maulding (Bighorn Longbows) made me a beautiful bow using Yew. My very first shot from it just outside my back door fresh from the box was a perfect shot on target! I’ll never forget that moment…..nor forgive myself for selling it a year later. That was a well made masterpiece and I haven’t found another Yew like it since. But, I keep looking as I believe Yew makes a better bow. There’s a special “feel” with Yew that isn’t duplicated by any other wood. The bowyers I know have always said that the core wood in a bow doesn’t make any shooting difference given the bows are built alike. I have proven this wrong (as far as I’m concerned)in my many years shooting and many bows owned. I firmly believe that bows can be made from the same species wood from different trees (maybe from different areas) that perform better in the same applications. Just my 2 cents…..YMMV. Horserod
