I just tried my wood arrows against cement and granite on Mom’s day. With my 60# longbow and my new Maple, leopardwood, and red Balau all with 125gr points…some shafts 5/15. I shot at 1/2″ granite, and a cement block at 12 yards. I shattered the granite and the arrows bounced off the cement with no arrow damage except blunt points now! My daughter is going to try to you-tube it. (First time I did that and…very awsome). Kevin:D

I went to a stump shooting day in the Root and I was shooting woodies and everyone else was shooting carbons and I laughed for how many carbons broke but not my woodies. Just wanted to share . I have been reading a bunch of post about woods and man I’m back – been shooting my self bow and shoot woods and as another fellow tradbower would say Feels Good

Kev, I can’t wait to see the video mate, hopefully the upload is successful 😀
I was stumping a week or two ago and shot what I thought was a piece of trash sticking up out of the dirt. Turned out it was a piece of scrap white good half buried. My 11/32 sitka spruce snapped right behind the 190gn target point 😥 That particular shaft had achieved several hundred successful flights up until that fateful day though. A good life ended with a surprising metallic ‘ping’ 😉

Well I can’t believe how much people are willing to spend on those carbons. AND they have to add so much junk on them to make them heavier etc. And what’s the deal with painting carbons to look like wood…and then call them “traditional”? I just refuse to go down that road and I hope to give folks an alternative besides POC or spruce.

It seems every time I voice an opinion, I go back and look at what I just said…I think I sounded critical of folks who buy carbon arrows. I’m sorry for comming across that way. Of course if there is no other alternatives, carbons would be the way to go. I think what I’m really trying to say is I always wished that more companies invested the time and effort in producing wood arrows that could stand up to carbons. Hope that’s clear as mud. Kevin:oops:

Hey Kevin,
I shoot carbons for the consistency. I’m only into this for a few years now and I can use all the help I can get! I main point, though, no offense taken. To each his own. I certainly have a load of opinions that offend, even though I don’t mean them to. All the best, dwc

Kevin your fine – I jumped into carbons last year because of the big fuss over carbons and thought I would find out what it was all about. I was real frustrated over what to shoot and weights and finding places to buy . I feel they were too complicated , expensive , problems with assembling them and keeping them together and as I wrote in 1 thread they have no soul . The good things I found was that my groups were tighter — I thought ?? Last night I was shooting woodies and my groups were fine laying right next to the carbons . All in all I think mostly I just miss making them and they just feel right and look good. For me my biggest problems shooting is form. Love the wood

I couldn’t have said better. It’s like after putting your personality into a self bow, then go hunting with it…you know your weapon/art personally. I think the same goes for self arrows…you know each one by heart and they (arrows) are on your side as you walk through the woods looking for game. The satisfaction and sense of purpose seem to be magnified ten times when you know that your hands, skill, and dedication has produced results.

I tried shooting into granite and cement today…on one shot the arrow stuck into the granite and stayed..lol…and with the cement most bounced off but one arrow left the point stuck into the cement. My som took a video and we’ll try and get that up this week.
