wood arrows and their weight

is there any of knowing roughly, say within +/- 50 grains, depending on various woods their weight to spine ratio? wanting to use heavy wood arrows for hunting. 29″-30″ draw length. 600+ grains total arrow weight. 11/32 and 23/64 diameter. thanks

Almost all of them with a Tuffhead on the end. 😀

Hickory is the heaviest I have, Ash and Doug fir are mid range and Cedar is “normal” yet still weigh over 600 with a Tuffhead.

Even my Tonkin cane are over 600 with a Tuffhead and tapered too.

Not only the easy way out but a great head that will give you as about as high of FOC as youll be able to get with woodies……until the 300 grain tuffheads arrive.

Just info, not the only choices of course. It’s just a better option FOR ME to shoot a heavy head and spine whatever woodie I want to shoot to the head and bow to get 600 plus (even 700 plus) and give me around a 20 percent FOC and a great flying arrow when tuned.

Works without the higher FOC but I just like the results.

Ive got some hickory and Sweetland arrows that weigh 500 grains + WITHOUT a head.

heavy heads in the forum, thanks—how about calculating spine weight to heavy or lighter broadheads? I read this somewhere today in the forums (i think). God bless you too, Steve.

There is much here in the forum on tuning with heavy heads or any head, actually.

Tuning is tuning.

The guys and gals there have it down to more of a science than my “home brewed” method developed some 4 decades ago.

For me, with bows 46-50 lbs, spines of 65-70 work awfully well with Tuffheads and my 28 inch draw. With standard 130 grain or so heads those same arrows were shot out of a 62lb recurve. I hope that is useful and about all I can muster from this end of the web.

You might need to kick the above information up ANOTHER 5 lbs for your draw length with Tuffheads, but that is just a ball park answer. Wood has a personality all it’s own and I FEEL (not going to start that, lol) not all “behave” as supposed to sometimes.

I’ve sets of arrows in spines that “Shouldn’t Work” but do…..actually very, very well.

Your bow’s centershot will also be a factor and there is a thread here on that as well.

I’ll suggest reading all the info offered by others in the “tuning” threads. A light will come on to give you a direction in your efforts, yet it is not all that cut and dried, IMHO.

The proof is in the pudding…..Shooting them and adjusting from there.
