I was in church this past Sunday and I just couldn’t get this question of why do I shoot my stick and string? I thought about it and prayed about it. This is what came to be my answer and I agree with it entirely.
I heard once that a target for an archer had two rings. The center ring was in a way perfection and the rest of the target was called sin. I then thought about the path it must take which is the straight and narrow path which the path as followers of the faith must take.
I then started thinking about how the arrow flies and how hard it seems to be to hit our mark in the bullseye which we could call perfection and to avoid that which is sinful. The arrow that has too much weight up front will be weak and will ultimately miss the mark, but on the flip side of the coin an arrow that is too strong ( I saw this as pride) will always miss the mark. This being said I found it so wonderful to think then that an arrow must be a mixture of strength and weakness to find equilibrium and to flight straight to hit the mark. As this is done, I thought of humanity. We are weak, but through faith we are also strong that we may also hit the mark occasionally. Christ being a perfectly tuned arrow that may be loosed over and over, never missing the mark.
This made me so warm inside to think that I shoot for Christ not for myself, because I feel stronger in my faith because I am able to tie them together. I quite often praise God for the ability to enjoy archery and the adventures that I am able to have with just a stick and string.

Very well said Andrew. I too have that connection. Sometimes in archery, if we try too hard and don’t be still and let go, we will miss the mark, as in life.
