Interesting pic of White Whitetailed Deer from the Seneca Army Depot in Seneca County New York. I took last week. This is one or two of the only White Whitetailed Deer herds in North America. They are NOT Albinos, they are just All White. Pretty cool. The Depot is now closed. I remember when it was a Nike Missile Base, in my Army days. They do open up for a controlled hunt now and then, I hear it is very expensive Sorry.. for me shooting fenced in animals is just wrong. Not Fair Chase.

If the fence is there and the deer are inside the fence and are not able to jump it (or otherwise circumvent it) and the hunt is not for the sport of it, but for keeping the herd in check, what would propose as an alternative?

I should have just posted the pic and left it at that. I am not looking for any debates about high fences or otherwise. Call it what it is – a Kill. Hire a professional Animal Control agency to come in with sharpshooters, selectively thin the herd and then donate the meat to the food pantries. Organizing a “hunt” inside an enclosed compound and allowing so-called “hunters” in the shoot them for a exorbatant fee, just gives all hunters a black eye.

              No debate. Just a question.

We see white deer very occasionally unfortunately they are shot on site by landowners as they are magnets for poachers.

I believe there have been both albino and pie-bald whitetail deer killed here in western Montana, in the past. One area actually has a fairly strong piebald gene in the herd, too. There was a 5 point (5×5 for the easterners, no offense intended) albino bull elk killed west of my home town a few years ago, as well. Was very interesting. Also, I know of two albino black bears that were killed over a 15 to 20 year period within close proximity to each other near my home town, as well. One back in the 80’s, and the other about 6 or 8 years ago. I think it would be neat to have the opportunity to harvest such a unique animal, but I would be tempted to let it walk for the exact same reason…because it IS unique.

Some say its serious bad juju to kill a white deer. I’m not superstitious myself, but I’m just sayin’. I’ve not seen one to shoot so I don’t know.

Here in Tenn they have made it against the law to shoot them. Seems I remember reading La Rue or Dr Marchant saying that white was actually the predominate gene but evolution brought the other colors for survival. They also said that the presence of white, piebald or albinos are a sign the herd is way out of balance with the carrying capacity and a disease crash is likely. Tenn. has received these reports but chose not to heed the warning signs. Of course we can become excellent hunter as only true albinos are against the law so we have to get close enough to see if their eyes are pink.

We had a little calico buck down the road! It was pretty cool to see him. Cute little 4 point with almost 85% of his body white. I haven’t seen him in a long time though!
