I’ve been feeling bad for weeks, couldn’t sleep, sore, can’t concentrate, etc…finally about two weeks ago I couldn’t stand the pain in my right side and I went to the ER. The diagnosed me with a strained back, some muscle or other and gave me some pain killer and a muscle relaxer, both of which made me so sick I ended up in the ER again 4 days later. I was dehydrated from throwing up, etc…..I didn’t eat for 4 days and I was miserable…that doc was unsure what was wrong that started it all but he took me off the meds, and I did improve a little..but I still had that persistent pain in my side and I finally got in to see my doc’s nurse prac….she ordered an X-ray and I have a compression fracture in one of my vertebrae,,,the one attached to my bottom rib on right side….so, at least I know what’s wrong,,,but I haven’t felt like hunting and it hurt to pull my bow back, is this permanent? I’m supposed to see my doc after the this holiday and we’re going to talk about options….Has anyone had similar problems?

As the saying goes, Critch, “I feel your pain”.

This is a link to something that discusses treatments. The segment on Balloon Kyphoplasty is what I was searching for.

          http://www.spine-health.com/conditions/osteoporosis/vertebral-compression-fracture-treatment-review

I knew several who went into the procedure with severe pain and walked out after (out-patient) without pain…thereafter as well.

I don’t know if you can find persons who do it in MO, but we had one in Lancaster County, PA. Pretty cool what they can do… had the guy who did those in our area do a ‘lamenectomy’ on me yrs later.

Don’t wait too long…not sure how “fresh” it has to be before they can’t do it…

Thank you Doc. I’ve gotten far more information from you than I have from anyone else…

“Doc” is a handle…I’m not a real doc, just a name. But I had experience with that Kyphoplasty as I related in a PM.

Perhaps others are like me, if I know nothing, I keep my yap shut… if I know a little, I’ll make sure I say it’s just a speculation.

Find a surgeon who does that procedure…way I understand, it’s been around now at least 10 yrs and compression fractures are a horrid way to go and it fixes them i n a jiffy… but timing is everything!

Get after it! Google it in your area of MO…and travel where you must.

              Pretty cool procedure… Good luck!

I’m not sure they even have Trad Shoots in TN…least not anywhere near close!

And…guess what…? Somewhere, I do have one! LOL

Doc, they gotta have shoots down your way. Seems like when i was thinking about a shooting school a few years back they were all down south.

                    Have fun! Dwc

                      Dave,

I’m sure they do!! TN is one long state side to side…lotsa driving. There are some huge competitions out in the Western part… some in AL way south of me…etc.

Just not a priority right now with the master bathroom shower leaking at the drain from improper installation prior to my purchase! Doh!:?

That’s bad news mate but like they say, bad news doesn’t get better with age, so at least now you know. Spinal compression fractures are reasonably common at my work, some guys seem to come back fine, others have ongoing dramas.

Hopefully your treatment and recovery goes well mate, keep us updated.

Just as an aside, when ever I go to a doctor/dentist/surgeon I take a notepad and pen, start with the date and doc’s name then take pertinent notes. If I don’t know a word she’s used I ask her to spell it and then explain it. It seems to benefit both parties. The docs realise you’re actually interested in what’s going on with your body and you get a better grasp on problems/solutions and you build your own little personal medical record to reference if you go back, or get referred to a specialist etc.

                        All the best mate,

                        Jim

For better or worse, I am a real doctor. I am sorry to hear of your problems. Advice over the Internet is worth what you pay for it. Unfortunately, controlled studies conducted by impartial observers have shown that at three months the results from kyphoplasty are no better than doing nothing. If your pain is due to an uncomplicated compression fracture, it will almost certainly go away on its own. I know nothing about your age or general health. While acute compression fractures can be quite painful, they usually don’t cause all the symptoms you describe. I would get a second opinion to be sure that something else isn’t going on. Don

Critch good luck I just had back surgery in june – it’s taken me this long to come back and I am still not 100% . Just started shooting again and hiking . I’m with DT get another opinion – I swore I wasn’t having surgery you know this can’t be happening to me . I could not walk stand lay down just in terrible pain. I do a lot of stretching (not as much as I should but I do ) and lots of natural oils fish hemp flax and some other stuff – they all taste like crap but seem to help . Wish you the best
