Summer is upon is in full swing and it’s fishing season. Down here, I do a lot of trout, smallmouth, hybrid, and striper fishing through the summer but around Sept 10, things change.
My buddy Tailfeather, who lives in southwest GA, prodded me last year into scouting out some bear turf in the N GA mountains. For our first time out, we did incredibly well. Joe let a small bear walk, and I killed a pig, shot a bear, and saw 9 bears in six hours of hunting. Since then, I’ve all but forgotten about deer in archery season as the bears draw my full attention.
That will, once again, be our first big game hunt of the season. What’s yours? Is there a camp involved or do you just step out the door? I’m sure it’s elk for a lot of you. Let’s hear about what’s coming up in your life!
BTW- shooting my recurves has picked up quite a bit and I’m using a lot of techniques to control my target panic. I’m feeling very confident in my 18 yard effective range. 😀

Elk for me, starting Aug. 30th and going through Sept. 30th.
No, I’m not counting the days or anything…

Elk in SW Colorado!! I’m pretty feverish already!, especially since I missed last year!
Right now I’m at Stage I Wapiti fever, which is deciding which bow, which arrow, and which glove! The only constant is my broadhead: 175gr Abowyer brown bear, my only bhead the last 4 years.

To start, just down the rd from here in October for deer. Maybe a tent trip to the N of here later in Oct. or early Nov. I do so much driving on the job though I almost can’ t stand the thought of getting in a vehicle for even a recreational trip these days!

Whitetail Oct 1 in Osage county Okla

September 16th. Taking a 3 day camping trip down the KS river. Hunting whitetail with primitive tackle. I’m trying not to let myself get excited about it yet but every time I find myself daydreaming it’s about being in that river valley with my hands full of sticks and stones.

I’ll probably start with the early antlerless archery here which starts mid-September. Probably a quick day trip, or an after-work stop on the way home. Then, a week later I am driving up to Quebec for a semi-guided fishing trip (interrupted mornings and evenings with trying to make a bull moose believe I am a suitable mate 😆 ). Beyond that, just day trips to my buddy’s back yard, some woods near by I have permission to hunt and maybe even scout around for some new areas. Maybe this will be the year. If not, oh well. My son is getting to the age where I will probably start taking him for “walks” in the woods. Be well.

BTW: Etter, are you doing blackbeard this year again? Hope to hear some more about it. Wanted to join in this year, but the moose thing came up. Maybe 2014? Let me know. Be well.

Depending on my recovery of a ruptured Achilles…Hopefully I will be chasing Pronghorn on August 15th. If not, then perhaps elk on Aug 31st. I am hoping and praying that I will get a chance to hunt this year. I probably won’t be able to hunt elk in my beloved high country area but should be able to pursue them in some lower altitude areas. I am also planning a late season Roosevelt elk hunt in Washington. I most definitely will be ready for that!

I’ll probably get after a few local hogs in August, but my first real hunt of the season will be the September bear camp Etter mentioned.
Incredibly envious of you fellows who will be elk hunting late Aug/Sep.

This year it will be bear. My first time pursuing black bear.
Excited doesn’t really describe how I’m feeling about it!! Chomping at the bit to get up there and scout!!!
I’ve picked up some property that has hogs, but they’re going to start clear cutting it soon……. I was hoping to get out there and find some summertime swine to pass the time…

Hogs for me if I feel like challenging the heat. We have a few down here in the swamps of florida.

Absolutely. This will be year four for me. I have some annual trips that just never ever get missed. We may be expanding our family in the future so some of these might change, but opening weekend of turkey with tailfeather in SW GA, Opening of bear season in the N GA mtns, and the december blackbeard hunt are my most favorite. Somebody from our group will always be going so you’ll always have people to hang with, should you decide to head south.
ps- I would’ve done the same thing. The boreal forest is just so awesome.

I will be in the same bear camp with Etter, Tailfeather and Buckyt. This will be my first bear hunt.
I got super pumped up yesterday. I scouted an area with turkey, hog and bear sign. i also found a lone bear at the campsite. It was quite exciting to say the least.
