In one of my other posts a member asked me what type of bow I shoot and I thought it make a good topic. I am a confirmed primative archer as I make all my own gear. Here is what I use.

I use a self bow made of Osage Orange and bamboo backed it was my second attempt at making a bow. The first bow was made of hickory and I took off to much tiller and ruined it. My bow is 61 inches long and is rated at 41 pounds with a 28 inch draw length, I draw closer to 29 inches so I think it is really closer to 45 or 46 pounds. The arrows I use are made of ceder or bamboo and they are 29 1/2 inches long and spined at 50 pounds. I like a heavier arrow to make up for my lower drawing weight. I use Bear Super razor heads (the green ones)the same broadhead my grand dad hunted with. I also use stone heads made of obsidian or flint that I make myself.

Lets here what type of bows everyone uses and attach pictures.

          Longbows!!

I’ve got a 68″ 65#@31″ Bama longbow made out of Bocote and maple and a 68″ 56#@31″ Royal longbow made out of curly maple, cocobola, and bocote veneers.

I shoot my Dad’s Silvercreek 66″ longbow whenever I go home to visit. I know nothing about the specs of that bow.

It depends…this year I am using a 15 year old Jeffery Royal Hunter recurve…red oak limbs backed with clear glass.

Sometimes I hunt with one of my other recurves (Robertson, Habu, etc)…

Then other times it is either an osage selfbow with static recurve tips or a vine maple selfbow with slight deflex in center and reflex on limb ends.

For arrows it is doug fir or sitka spruce with usually Ribtek heads but will also use trade points.

              it is all good…

I favor my Chirun/Samick Spikeman 50# recurve, and my Bear Super Kodiak Grayling 55# the most. I like recurves better, and the longbows are not getting used at all.

I have three longbows, a Howard Hill Big Five 55#, a Great Plains “Bamboo” 55#, and my newest and best shooting Martin Savannah 50#.

                        I have several I really like. I’m shooting a current Bear Super-K 60 @ 28, & a Howard Hill 66″ Big 5 60 @ 28.
I also shoot a couple of Fox longbows & a Breed. I’ve got a Blacktail Elite that is a really sweet bow.

For hunting, a 62″ mild D/R longbow, either a Robertson or a Great Northern Critter Gitter. I also have a 58″ Pronghorn TD and a 58″ Selway Lil Mag (now Centaur) that are both GREAT hunters. I target shoot with a Griffin Tsunami. Then there are the ’67 Bear Griz and the Hoyt PH1 that I really need to get into the woods with.

So many bows, so little time.

Right now a 62″ centaur longbow 62# @ my 30″ draw love it!!! Also 62″ sweptwing recurve 64# @ my 30″ . Lost a sweptwing recurve, and acadian woods hybrid that both were stolen when my house was robbed 2 years back. Im patiently waiting for my new blackmoutain/dryad shaman static recurve 54″ 55# @ my 30″ draw the use of ground blinds here in texas has worked well for me on couple different propertys i hunt. Im just needing a shorter bow that’s easy to maneuver. Then there are so many hogs that stalking would be easier with a shorter bow aswell

I shoot my Elk River 70″ longbow, which is 52# @ 28″…..which makes me a ground hunter ever since I fell in love with shooting it. Atually, I was getting tired of falling out of trees and it’s a good excuse to do just that, since it’s not very handy in a tree stand…….or maybe, just getting old.

Hickory selfbows mostly, 65-60# at 29.5″. Flatbow style, with very stiff tips. Around 66″ nock to nock for the most part.

Lately I’ve started experiementing with making glass bows, hybrids and straight bows, and so far I’m liking the hybrids too. Good cast with low shock. Just need to make one with a grip I’m more used to:wink:

RER LX 3 piece takedown longbow. 46# @ 28″. Tigerwood riser and limb veneers. I am a compounder coming over to trad and really liking it. I enjoy these trad forums more than the compound ones, at least half of their threads are about problems; can’t tune their new $900 bow, 280 fps isn’t fast enough, etc. 🙄

                                          I also have a JD Berry Pin Viper that’s 64″ 62# @ 29″ and a Martin Hatfield recurve.

Browning always made lovely boys. George, how many bows at a time, on average, do you own? For those who can afford it, I think collecting older “classic” bows — all the ones I couldn’t afford when younger — would be a really fascinating hobby, as each model would have its own history. And it’s certainly cheaper than collecting classic guitars! dave

I’m partial to longbows, selfbow, backed or glass doesn’t matter. Lately I’ve been enjoying building, shooting and hunting with 3-piece, take-down glass longbows. The primitive bows speak to me more than the others though so it won’t be long before I’m back to those again.
