Saturday is my (not going to mention how many) birthday. My wife asked me what I wanted to do for it. I told her I wanted to be in the woods and hunt.

So this year I have been blessed with my most productive season to date. I’ve killed 5 deer with my longbow including one of my biggest bucks from the ground. My freezer is full. I am tagged out on bucks.

So now I face a decision to hunt on Saturday in frigid temps. on during one of the first weekends in firearms season and can only shoot does. None of my hunting buds want to join me. My wife thinks I am nuts and maybe she is correct!

As I sit here and think why…..several reasons strike me. I want to put a Howard Hill Head to the test, I want to hunt from the ground, I want to make a near perfect shot, I might get a crack at a squirrel…….and I just enjoy the challenge of it all…the hunt… Is it worth it to wake early, face the freezing temps., the baffoonish gun hunters that will be crashing through the brush, the long hike up the rocky hillside in the dark, the very real chance if I even get another shot that I will blow it….??? Well, maybe someday it won’t, but for now it definitely is!

          Happy Birthday Two4,

Enjoy your time in the woods. Perhaps the weather will get really nasty and you’ll have the place to your self! Good for you to be stretching it out. Enjoy, dwc

What motivate me….being out there with the animals in their environment with out being detected. The beauty of nature and its creatures.

Maybe, someday, I will get a big one!8)

Just walking through the woods with an ASL and a back quiver full of arrows is joy enough to fill the whole day.

By the time this time of year rolls around, I’d really rather the squirrels and deer just keep their distance.

Finished turning the last deer into 35 packages of burger, 4 packages of backstraps, and one tasty package of tenderloin for a special occasion not including the kids 8)

                Whew!

And leave those deer alone! Five deer in a season with a longbow is a crazy good memory. Savor it! I, for one, an jealous. My best year was four with the bow. Predictably followed up by my worst season of one with the bow.

                Happy Birthday and Many More!

I guess it’s been in me since I was born, to be out and about in nature and away from it all.

Fortunately I had parents that allowed me to roam the country.

Then when I learned the love of a longbow and quiver of arrows to go along with my roaming ways, whoa.

Most of my peaceful times are and have been roaming with my bow, hunting or stumping or sharing a traditional gathering with friends and family, all are treasured.

Peace and quiet anymore is a deserved thing.

                  Happy Birthday and happy trails.

Speaking of birthdays, “It’s a Wonderful Life” with Jimmy Stewart was on last night. When I saw when it was made………..golly! I’ve watching that show for a long, long, long, time. It started when I was one 1…. Makes one feel 70ish or something.

Where I grew up, we had 1 TV channel. It never was on, and I never new about it till my wife introduced it to me when our boy was having his first christmas. That was 17 years ago.

I always get choked up at the end. I plan for it, strategize, and still… Dang it! So now I just plan to be somewhere on the couch where I can’t be seen and I get a copy of TBM to page through strategically at the end 🙄

This year I’m gonna beat it for sure! I’ll keep the mag close just in case…

Just kinda funnin there, we had not TV til late 50’s then we went overseas and what little TV that was there wasn’t in my language for sure.

I’m still a year older than the movie though. That don’t change:roll:

Why do we do what we do?

Why do I blind bail practice working on full draw while using my Saunders Fab Tab. Love the tab but my lips don’t. Ouch.

Makes ya wanna not reach that anchor or go back to that nice soft glove.

You’d think at my age I wouldn’t have to keep learning lessons the hard way:wink:

Not knocking tabs, just today it beat me up.

I watched Clay’s movie Sunday morning with a late breakfast. I had carried a stand and gear to hide it all over the woods looking for another best spot in the world. I ended up bringing it home anyway feeling quite content with the stands I already have up for the time left in the season. Plus, two4 got me inspired to spend a little more time on the ground. Anyway, back to the film… As Clay said in the end, it’s the mystery that takes me back. Trying to figure it out, trying to find something that might not really be lost and trying to feel like I’m the first one walking that trail looking…

                        Best to you all, dwc

My motivation is just getting out into the woods, observing nature. The kill is secondary for me. I grew up with a grampa and 5 uncles who hunted and trained my cousins and myself to observe gun safety. Anybody caught handling weapons in an unsafe manner got the switch the first time. The second time was a lifetime firearm ban. Grandpa, RIP , had a lot of influence, and our parents agreed with the ban. I’m the only one who continues to hunt and I never got the switch. I don’t remember NOT hunting, I’ve been hunting so long. I turned 50 this year.

My gun seasons ran from the first week of the rifle season in Maine, then small game to stay occupied til 6 day, then a week up in Hainesville. I began wondering about archery because I have never taken a shot at a deer over 40 yards away. In Maine I couldn’t even see 20 yards away. I find aperture sights to be very adequate and have only fired a scoped rifle once, and got a little bloody doing it ha-ha. I began archery 2 years ago with a borrowed compound. I didn’t like it. Too much crap on it, using a release, peep and sights, etc. The stickbow is my weapon of choice now.

What motivates me to do what I do?

A day spent in the woods (or a night, or at the ocean, or on a river) is far more enjoyable than anything else I could be doing.
